Making LCA information relevant to end users: the CAP’EM database
Brian MURPHY, Founder Greenspec
With 10 partners in 5 countries, the CAP’EM project aims at developing a methodology to evaluate
materials. Once the methodology is developed, the goal is to implement it then classify, disseminate
and demonstrate the use of materials through our buildings, which we aim to turn into training centres
for local builders and professionals. The project spans four years and 8 million euros.
We want to increase the manufacturing, distribution and use of eco-materials in the north western
Europe building industry. Thus, we need easily accessible data to compare properties and better
demonstrate the benefits of eco-materials. This in turn will allow us to develop supply chains in these
5 countries.
So far, we have produced tools, defined eco-materials, provided translations, and developed the
CAP’EM method. We are also creating an Excel spreadsheet with regularly used environmental
construction terms and are gathering literature to make it accessible for end -users. The CAP’EM
database gives information on 100 materials but lacks funding for more.
In our database, we include environmental and end-of-life solutions and cradle-to-cradle LCAs for
construction projects. We regionalize the LCAs to adapt them to each country. We are developing a
graphic user interface for the database so the search engine can understand the appropriate use of
each material, and not just pick the lowest LCA. It is a demonstration database rather than a product
database. We are trying to make it interactive so you can add your own information . We are also
working on a front end of database which lets us search for materials by their pictures.
When do you think these tools will be available?
Brian MURPHY
We are going full speed ahead to have it ready by January 2012.
Brian MURPHY
We cover a hundred materials and aims to cover hundreds of generic materials and products.
What do you plan to do after this project?
Brian MURPHY
Our next project will be CAP’EM 2. We want do LCAs on whole buildings, not just component par ts.
Once we have our 100 green and violet, aka non-environmentally friendly, products we hope all
partners will work with more manufacturers, and develop more content in Europe.
