IMPORTANT COMMUNICATION
TO AAFI-AFICS MEMBERS
At its session on 10 April, 2008, the Committee decided that the June issue of the Bulletin should contain
information for members of the Association on the decision which it took on 8 May in respect of relieving Jean
Hanus of his responsibilities as Vice-Chairman of the Committee. It also decided that Jean Hanus should be
free to put forward his point of view. Herewith are the two communications.
COMMUNIQUÉ
In the history of any political institution, however humble, there comes a moment of conflict or dissension
which can only be resolved through forthright action. AAFI-AFICS is no exception.
Over a number of years the views of the Committee as a whole have increasingly been at odds with those of
one of its most senior Bureau members, Jean Hanus. At heart, the views of Jean have diverged most
dramatically from those of the Committee in respect of the role played by AAFI-AFICS in the greater forum of
the Federation of Former International Civil Servants (FAFICS) and in particular the role of FAFICS in the
UN Joint Staff Pension Board. */
Matters came to a head in the last session of the Annual General Assembly when, to the embarrassment of
a great many of those present, Jean Hanus presented views from the podium which were clearly at odds
with those of the Committee. He accused FAFICS of “sabotaging” the process destined to lead to the
election of representatives of the retirees in the Pension Board itself.
The Committee took matters in hand and on 13th March adopted a motion which relieved Jean Hanus of his
responsibilities as Vice-Chairman (Pensions) of the AAFI-AFICS Committee, charged inter-alia with relations
with the UN Pension Fund. He will continue as a member of the Committee.
The Committee is conscious of the need to bring closure to these matters and to restore that spirit of
collegiality and responsibility in which it has worked over many decades.
SACRILEGE ?
In the history of any political (or other) institution, there comes a moment when it looses sight of its mission,
however altruistic it may have been at the origin, to focus on itself and the safeguard of what it considers as
its properly institutional interests. AAFI-AFICS is no exception to that.
