Notice to AAFI-AFICS Members
At the Committee's session on 13 March at which it took the decision to relieve him of the functions of Vice-
President (pensions), Jean Hanus stated that he would continue to serve out the mandate for which he had
been elected, but that, in the circumstances, while remaining heedful of the needs of retirees, he would no
longer be available for individual consultations with Members of the Association.
In consequence - awaiting the designation of a new Vice-President (pensions) - Members are invited to
address questions for advice or information on pension matters directly to the Chairman of the
Association. He will take the necessary steps to respond in as short a time as possible. Moreover, he
would be grateful to hear from any Member who has sought advice on a pension matter but not received
a reply, in order to take necessary action without delay.
NEWS FROM OTHER ASSOCIATIONS
Readers of the AAFI-AFICS Bulletin will have noticed that we endeavor to keep them informed of life and
developments in other retiree associations and sections in Geneva and elsewhere in the world. We do so,
mostly on the basis of information gathered from the Newsletters and Bulletins issued by the different
associations.
ASSOCIATION OF FORMER ICITO/GATT-WTO STAFF MEMBERS
Recently a copy of a “GATT/WTO Retiree Newsletter” came into our hands. This was the Fifth Newsletter
issued by the Association’s Executive Committee. It contained information on pensions and health
insurance, articles contributed by retired and active Association members and useful guidance for retirees
as, for example, information on where you can have your hearing tested.
The Newsletter also contained an “Information Sheet” on what to do in case of death of a retiree, with
guidance on essential steps to be taken by retirees in order to help their survivors in the event of their death.
It also provides advice on action to be taken by survivors upon the death of a GATT/WTO retiree, including
particular details for the benefit of survivors of a retiree who may have passed away in the Geneva area,
including neighboring France. AAFI-AFICS congratulates its Geneva-based sister association on this
excellent project and we are grateful to its representative on the AAFI-AFICS Committee, Claude Mercier, for
his permission to draw on its contents for an update of our own publication “Checklist of Items of Information
needed by Survivors in the event of a Pensioner’s death”.
In common with other retiree associations, the Association of Former GATT-WTO Staff Members is also
organizing meetings of its members, lunches and holds a regular Annual Assembly. It has one
representative on the WTO Pension Board and two representatives on the WTO Health Insurance.
Former staff of the old ICITO/GATT and of the successor organization WTO, who wish to learn more about
this retiree association and become member, can contact its Chairperson Christina Schröder, on Geneva
