Launched in October 2002 in Istanbul by seventeeninitiating members from various universities, governmental and international organizations, TUGA is anation-wide network of researchers, policy and decision makers working in the field of internal andinternational migration (list of initiating members is attached).TUGA aims at:• Networking to enhance communication and co-operation among researchers working in thefield of migration within Turkey and abroad;• Promoting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research on diverse aspects of the causes,dynamics and consequences of internal and international migration;• Developing research capacities and enhancing theoretical and methodological knowledge ofmigration through sharing research expertise and information in national and internationalconferences, symposia, seminars, workshops and lecture series;• Setting-up sub-units, task forces and working groups for fulfilling specific duties, such asundertaking joint research projects on migration;• Disseminating the results of activities through various publications, books, working papers anda website;• Acting as a national focal point towards the dissemination of information on ongoing projects,research activities, circulating relevant information concerning migration policies and relatedactivities;• Providing research and advisory services for policy and decision makers at national andinternational levels;• Allocating and monitoring funds for reasearch projects provided by national andinternational foundations and other sources.44
TUGA works with a far-reaching network of individuals and institutions in academic, governmental andnon-governmental institutions within Turkey and abroad. The purpose of these fellowships is to promote closer relations and scholarly exchange betweenTurkey and Greece by supporting the research of nationals of the Republic of Turkey in any field of thehumanities and social sciences from pre-historic to modern times who need to conduct their study inGreece. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) will provide free membershipand room and board at a reduced student rate to Aegean Fellows during the tenure of the fellowship.Eligibility:1. Candidates must be Turkish citizens.2. Candidates must have completed their Ph.D. coursework and passed all qualifying examinations for the degree beforeentering the tenure of the fellowship, or must have received their Ph.D. before entering the tenure of the fellowship.3. Projects of duration of at least one month are preferred. Candidates should begin their research in Greece at the latest bySeptember 30, 2004.4. Research during tenure of the fellowship must be conducted in Greece.5. The project must require research that can only be conducted in Greece, such as study of monuments in Greece, or artifactsin Greek museums, collections and libraries.6. The Candidates should specify the institutions that they will need to consult in order to complete their research such as theAmerican School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA). If necessary, the candidates should also acquire any letters ofpermission from institutions or Greek authorities that may be required for the completion of their research in Greece.Awards:As many as four fellowships will be awarded. Each fellow will receive up to $2375 (USD). The Selection Committee for thegrants will be appointed by the ARIT branches in Istanbul and Ankara.Application:A complete application for a grant will consist of the following:1. Curriculum vitae.2. A statement of purpose of a maximum of five pages in English or Turkish which should include: a) the subject of theresearch, b) why this research needs to be done in Greece, c) how the candidate will conduct research while in Greece (such asthe institutions or museums the candidate will consult), and d) how the candidate's research will contribute to scholarship intheir field.3. A brief itemized budget of the projected expenses of your research in Greece.4.Full address, telephone number, and email contact information.5. List of publications (if applicable).6. Demonstration of proficiency in the language or languages necessary for conducting research abroad.7. At least two letters of recommendation. The name and contact information of the referee should be included with thecandidate's application. The referees should send their letters directly to the ARIT-Ankara postal address.
