Thanks to the entrepreneurial vision of Ferruccio Bresciani, heir toa family tradition dating back to the early 20 th century, a businessin the field of industrial production and in the machining of mirrorsfor the furniture industry was established in 1939 in Mariano Comense. The company developed knowledge and techniques learned fromthe workshops of craftsmen engaging in silver coating of float glass. The choice of Mariano Comense as the headquarters of the newcompany was based on the need to stay closer to the craftsmen andindustries working in the field of furniture, since they had always beenexcellent customers to made-to-measure mirrors, and indeed are stillprivileged business partners for glass and for furniture items obtainablefrom glass. The company accomplished a great leap ahead in the nineteen-sixtieswhen it revived an old glaziers’ technique: the chemical etchingof glass. It had been experimented with by Heinrich Schwanhardtin the 17 th century and then applied also by Emile Gallé and the Daumbrothers, among others. For centuries it had remained confined amongglaziers working on a craftsman’s scale, but starting in 1965 it wasinvestigated in depth and developed on an industrial scale preciselyby Vitrealspecchi, who patented the chemical etching process for frostingand decoration of large sheets of float glass. Chemically processedfrosted glass was immediately recognised as a genuine revolutionin its field, and its superiority in terms of quality over the traditionalsandblasted glass, which was rough, porous and therefore difficultto clean, became clear. The technique spread immediately and thequality of the products was so easily recognised that it has continuedto exist undisputed until the present day, with the trademark Madras ®that distinguishes the sheets of glass produced by Vitrealspecchi bymeans of chemical treatment of its surface.Madras ® (the name came from the ripples produced by the chemicalcorrosion, which were reminiscent of a particular type of processingapplied to Indian silk and the highlights it creates), stands out bycomparison with traditional moulded glass, that is to say withdecorations impressed on it during the casting process, precisely dueto the basic material, float glass. This is produced in large sheets offlawless glass, free from any impurities and with perfectly flat surfaces, that can be tempered.Over the years, the fields of application of Madras ® glass, for bothindoor and outdoor use, have multiplied, thanks to a considerableincrease in the range of products, in terms of both performance andaesthetic results. From the original use in top-of-the-range doors tonew non-slip glazing, from privacy glazing to scratchproof glass forworktops, from glass surfaces for the furniture industry to bathroomapplications, etc.In this process of continuous transformation and up-dating, the companyhas remained firmly anchored to a number of founding principles whichhave underlied its success in the over seventy years of its history.Passion, creativity and concreteness are the key concepts that summarisevery well the spirit of the company, since the will to avoid overturningits identity by running after temporary and ephemeral fashions and the
