With thirty different floor designs, each of which could be assembledin two or three different ways, he created a hundred differentcombinations, corresponding precisely to the number of rooms of theHotel. A unique research, inspired by the magic of the place, whichwas continued in a kind of generalized interpretation in the industrialproduction of majolica tiles of the Salerno-based manufacturerD’Agostino. Before we reach the conclusion of this short and incomplete anthologywe are only able to touch on one of the undisputed masters of Italiandesign, namely Achille Castiglioni. He dedicated himself to industrialdesign on the basis of a cognition of the spatial element rooted inhis education as an architect, and which are clearly recognizablealso in projects as the Splügen Bräu suspension lamp. Created tomeet the specific requirements of a bar-restaurant, the Splügen Bräuin Milan, it had to provide a low light on the dining tables and thusavoid transmitting heat to the counter. This problem was solved bymeans of a “thermos-type” diffuser in polished aluminium, hollow andcorrugated, whose amplified thermal exchange surface, not unlikethat of a radiator, allows an efficient dispersion of the heat, while thereflecting calotte placed below succeeds in casting a concentratedlight onto the table surface. The ability of this object, created to meet a specific requirement, tomeet a more general need, that is to say the demand for a low lighton the surface of a dining table, is demonstrated by its enormoussuccess. In fact, this lamp is still produced by Flos today.
