Nigel Young_Foster + PartnersViewed from space, theterminal evokes VirginGalactic’s brand logo ofthe eye, and is suggestiveof an elongated pupil,with the apron completingthe iris.Visitatori e astronauti accedono all’edificio attraversoun lungo “corridoio” scavato nel terreno. I muri disostegno sono adibiti a spazio espositivo, qui lastoria dell’esplorazione spaziale viene documentatafianco a fianco alla storia della regione e deisuoi primi abitanti. L’asse lineare del “corridoio”di accesso continua all’interno dell’edificio, sisviluppa in un percorso sopraelevato che attraversail terminal e conduce fino all’enorme hangar, incui si colloca la navicella spaziale e la stanza perle simulazioni di volo. All’interno del terminal, unafacciata vetrata con vista direttamente sulla pistacostituisce una perfetta “tribuna” da cui godersi ildecollo e l’atterraggio della navicella. L’edificio,pensato per ridurre al minimo le emissioni dianidride carbonica e a basso consumo energetico,mira a ottenere la prestigiosa certificazione LEEDGold. Il volume, basso, è scavato nel paesaggioper sfruttare al meglio la massa termica, l’edificiorisulta così protetto dagli estremi caratterizzanti ilclima del New Mexico ed è in grado di utilizzarele correnti occidentali per la ventilazione; i lucernariconsentono inoltre di godere appieno della lucenaturale. Realizzato con l’impiego di materiali localie tecniche di costruzione autoctone, l’edificio mira aessere sostenibile oltre che rispettoso del paesaggio.With minimal embodiedcarbon and few additionalenergy requirements, thescheme has been designedto achieve the prestigiousLEED Gold accreditation.The low-lying form is duginto the landscape to exploitthe thermal mass, whichbuffers the building from theextremes of the New Mexicoclimate as well as catching thewesterly winds for ventilation;and maximum use is madeof daylight via skylights.Built using local materialsand regional constructiontechniques, it aims to be bothsustainable and sensitive to itssurroundings.
