pattern and to what extent they
contribute to the societal vulnerability.
2. Values, attitudes and management
of environmental policies.
Th e prerequisites of environmental
policies and stewardship are
analyzed, including the evolution
of environmental ideas and attitudes.
Th is part also deals with
the sequence of the environmental
policy formation, particularly
planning and implementation.
Th e focus of the course is on the
Swedish experience.
3. Individual essay.
Each student will write a topical
essay concerning some specifi c aspect
dealt with in the course.
Course particulars:
Full-time study during one semester
(January-May 1995). Th e course
is jointly designed and taught in
English by the department faculty.
Entrance requirements: At least one
full year of undergraduate studies in
a discipline relevant to the course.

An Open Forum for Discussion of
Environmental History
Th is announces a change of address
for ASEH-L, a list open to the discussion
of all topics pertaining to
human interaction with the environment
in the past.
Environmental history is the study of
human interaction with the environment
in the past. Th e list, refl ecting
the fi eld, is highly interdisciplinary in
membership and discussion content.
Observers as well as active participants
are welcome: this is a public
forum. List-based discussion in the
liberal arts is in some ways more
akin to oral than to written discourse,
and its rhythms and achievements
are perhaps best compared
with the kind of communication
that occurs in public squares in those
countries which have managed to
maintain pre-modern traditions of
informal public gathering. Yet there
is a diff erence, too, in that all discussion
is recorded, retrievable, and
searchable by textstring with Boolean
operators. List archives are currently
available via the gopher server
at Texas Tech University (TTACS3.
ttu.edu; username: GOPHER) and
by listproc command.
