Landschap en technologie
in Hollufgaard
Humanities Research Center, Odense
University, Denmark January 10-12
1997
During the past thirty years two
scholarly discourses have emerged
that each address the complex relations
between advanced industrial
cultures and the natural world:
landscape studies and work on
technology and culture. Each of
these fi elds is interdisciplinary,
drawing to varying degrees on art,
history, literature, geography, anthropology,
and the social sciences.
Th e two areas of research share
many concerns, and this seminar
aims to advance the dialogue between
them through a two day
international seminar.
It will address such questions as the
following:
How have technologies been used
to shape or imagine landscapes,
for example at international exhibitions,
or in literature, photographs
and paintings?
14/15
How have technologies been used
to transform specifi c environments,
and what (often unanticipated)
changes have resulted?
How have technological innovations
been “naturalized,” so that
they seem to be in harmony with
their surroundings?
What are the relationships between
gender, technology, and specifi c
sites?
Is it possible to discuss a landscape
without having a concept of a
technology that is “appropriate”
for it?
How have diff erent cultures adapted
the same technologies to different
landscapes?
Conference presentations (c. 30
minutes) are invited in these and
related areas. Th e deadline for receipt
of abstracts and a short c.v. is
September 1,1996. Decisions on
acceptance will be made by October
1 at the latest.
