During the past thirty years two<br />

scholarly discourses have emerged<br />

that each address the complex relations<br />

betwe<strong>en</strong> ad<strong>van</strong>ced industrial<br />

cultures and the natural world:<br />

landscape studies and work on<br />

technology and culture. Each of<br />

these fi elds is interdisciplinary,<br />

drawing to varying <strong>de</strong>grees on art,<br />

history, literature, geography, anthropology,<br />

and the social sci<strong>en</strong>ces.<br />

Th e two areas of research share<br />

many concerns, and this seminar<br />

aims to ad<strong>van</strong>ce the dialogue betwe<strong>en</strong><br />

them through a two day<br />

international seminar.<br />

It will address such questions as the<br />

following:<br />

How have technologies be<strong>en</strong> used<br />

to shape or imagine landscapes,<br />

for example at international exhibitions,<br />

or in literature, photographs<br />

and paintings?<br />

How have technologies be<strong>en</strong> used<br />

to transform specifi c <strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>ts,<br />

and what (oft<strong>en</strong> unanticipated)<br />

changes have resulted?<br />

How have technological innovations<br />

be<strong>en</strong> “naturalized,” so that<br />

they seem to be in harmony with<br />

their surroundings?<br />

What are the relationships betwe<strong>en</strong><br />

g<strong>en</strong><strong>de</strong>r, technology, and specifi c<br />

sites?<br />

Is it possible to discuss a landscape<br />

without having a concept of a<br />

technology that is “appropriate”<br />

for it?<br />

How have diff er<strong>en</strong>t cultures adapted<br />

the same technologies to differ<strong>en</strong>t<br />

landscapes?<br />

Confer<strong>en</strong>ce pres<strong>en</strong>tations (c. 30<br />

minutes) are invited in these and<br />

related areas. Th e <strong>de</strong>adline for receipt<br />

of abstracts and a short c.v. is<br />

September 1,<strong>1996</strong>. Decisions on<br />

acceptance will be ma<strong>de</strong> by October<br />

1 at the latest.<br />

Th e theme for this year’s confer<strong>en</strong>ce<br />

will be <strong>de</strong>ath and life. Suggested<br />

topics inclu<strong>de</strong>: <strong>de</strong>struction and creation<br />

of people, cemeteries, corpses<br />

and graves ceremonies and technologies<br />

of birth and <strong>de</strong>ath, disease<br />

and epi<strong>de</strong>mic, war and mutinies,<br />

the concept of population, capital<br />

punishm<strong>en</strong>t, labor, midwifery, male<br />

birthing, pathos, s<strong>en</strong>tim<strong>en</strong>tality,<br />

mourning, elegies and other writing<br />

about the <strong>de</strong>ad, anatomical illustration<br />

and picturing the <strong>de</strong>ad.<br />

S<strong>en</strong>d 200 word abstracts, and, if<br />

possible, papers (15 pages maximum).<br />

We will consi<strong>de</strong>r proposal for interdisciplinary<br />

panels that draw on<br />

scholars from at least three diff er<strong>en</strong>t<br />

disciplines. Wh<strong>en</strong> proposing a<br />

panel, please indicate whether you<br />

would like individual papers consi<strong>de</strong>red<br />

separately if the panel is not<br />

accepted. Abstracts due October<br />
