Health in the city: a
history of public health
Call for papers
Th e second conference op the
International Network for the History
of Public Health (INHPH)
and the annual conference of the
society for the Social History if
Medcine (SSHM) wil be a joint
meeting held in Liverpool from
Th ursday 4th to Sunday 7th September
1997. Th is meeting wil
explore the history of urban public
health from its origins to the present
day by addressing a variety of
key themes which are refl ected in
the sessions listed below. It conicides
with a major new exhibition
at the Merseyside Maritime Museum
which looks at the history
of Public Health on the 150th anniversary
of the appointment of Dr
William Henry Duncan as Britain’s
fi rst Medical Offi cer of Health.
Sessions include:
1. Th e urban/rural divide: changing
patterns of demography and public
health. Addresses geographic
variations in the interdisciplinary
perspective.
