Th e second confer<strong>en</strong>ce op the<br />

International <strong>Net</strong>work for the History<br />

of Public Health (INHPH)<br />

and the annual confer<strong>en</strong>ce of the<br />

society for the Social History if<br />

Medcine (SSHM) wil be a joint<br />

meeting held in Liverpool from<br />

Th ursday 4th to Sunday 7th September<br />

1997. Th is meeting wil<br />

explore the history of urban public<br />

health from its origins to the pres<strong>en</strong>t<br />

day by addressing a variety of<br />

key themes which are refl ected in<br />

the sessions listed below. It conici<strong>de</strong>s<br />

with a major new exhibition<br />

at the Merseysi<strong>de</strong> Maritime Museum<br />

which looks at the history<br />

of Public Health on the 150th anniversary<br />

of the appointm<strong>en</strong>t of Dr<br />

William H<strong>en</strong>ry Duncan as Britain’s<br />

fi rst Medical Offi cer of Health.<br />

Sessions inclu<strong>de</strong>:<br />

1. Th e urban/rural divi<strong>de</strong>: changing<br />

patterns of <strong>de</strong>mography and public<br />

health. Addresses geographic<br />

variations in the interdisciplinary<br />
