De Amerikaanse vereniging voor
milieugeschiedenis is waarschijnlijk
de grootste organisatie van
milieuhistorici. Hal Rothman,
hoofdredacteur van Environmental
History bericht: Environmental
history is one of the most exciting
new disciplines to emerge in the
past two decades. It has tremendous
breadth, relates a range of diff erent
geographic fi elds together, links
urban and rural studies, off ers all
the dimensions available in the
study of history, links with numerous
other disciplines, and generally
off ers scholars a new set of insights
into the human experience. Loosely
defi ned, because that is all anyone
really can do, environmental history
is the study of human interaction
with the physical environment over
time. Th is of course has an almost
infi nite range of permutations, all
which we hope to discuss on this
list.
Under a recent agreement, the
American Society for Environmental
History (ASEH) and the Forest
History Society (FHS) copublish a
quarterly journal, Environmental
History. Th e fi rst issue, 1: 1 , features
Bill Cronon’s “Th e Trouble
with Wilderness,” commentary
by Sam Hays, Tom Dunlap, and
Michael Cohèn, and a response
from Bill, and articles about China
by Robert Marks and Brazil by Jose
Drummond. Environmental History
also features book reviews, a
biblioscope, and other materials.

We intend for the list to be the location
of dialogue and debate about
the fi eld of environmental history,
as well as a place where books are
reviewed, new publications announced,
and other matters of interest
to the members discussed and
debated.
ASEH also publishes a newsletter,
edited by Dennis Williams, who
also moderates the ASEH list, and
sponsors a biennial international
meeting and, beginning in 1996, a
regional meeting. Th e next biennial
is slated for Baltimore in March of
1997; stay tuned for more details,
such as offi cial announcements and
the call for papers. Th e fi rst regional
meeting will be held from August
1-4, 1996 in Pullman WA and
Moscow ID.
