The major parts of these lines are electrifiedtoday. The catenary poles, whose expected life span is 40-50 years, carry the contact line which provides today´s trainwith electricity. Regarding the quantity of catenary polesthe quality varies greatly in the country. The knowledge ofthe catenary poles status also varies heavily. In manyprojects it has been stated that catenary poles often areafflicted by corrosion problems in areas close to thefoundation tops.Civilian transport and cargo transport have increasedsignificantly the past few years. The increasing trafficencumberment is followed by an increasing necessity ofmaintenance. Each year large sums are reserved formeas<strong>ur</strong>es in management and maintenance, since theassigned reso<strong>ur</strong>ces are thin it is always a question aboutprioritizing. Regarding management and maintenance forrailways the cost is usually greater than their investmentcost, which should be considered in a life-cycle perspective.Replacing the construction can therefore be a more costeffectiveway.C<strong>ur</strong>rently a massive reinvestment program underBanverkets s<strong>ur</strong>veillance is in progress. In spite of this thereare lines where the decision to replace poles is not obvius,in some cases a more extensive maintenance is enough. Thequestion is how this should be determined? Is thevii
