After the signing ofPermanent Coastal CeasefireAgreement in 1853, the regionwas called the Ceasefire Coast.The British controlled the foreignpolicy of the region by allowing theformation of a pact known as theExclusive Agreement in 1892.The Ceasefire Coast was ruled bythe British East India Companybetween 1873 - 1947 and by theBritish Ministry of Foreign Affairsin the following years. Afterthe withdrawal of the Britishfrom the Persian Gulf in 1971,the emirates formed a federationunder the name of “United ArabEmirates.” The United Arab Emirateshave lived for centuries underthe Ottoman rule, and were cutoff from the Ottoman Empire bythe British with the discovery ofoil. It declared its independencefrom Britain on December 2nd,1971. The Independence Day iscelebrated as a national holiday.And its Constitution was createdagain on December 2 nd , 1971.Dubai has gained a great wealthby drilling of oil in the last 20years, and oil alone constitutes10% of its revenues.
