DMCA’s infinite innovations reinforce the
DUBAI maritime sector
With DMCA’s inventive initiatives leading the way, the local maritime sector has contributed to 7% of Dubai’s
GDP with an impressive overall value of 26.9 billion

Since its inception in 2007, Dubai
Maritime City Authority (DMCA)
has brought forth radical change to
progressively advance the local maritime
sector. Through an extensive
range of initiatives and regulations,
DMCA has reinforced its ambitious
approach to creating a safe environment
for industry leaders from all
over the world, while successfully reaffirming
Dubai’s position as a firstclass
international shipping hub.
Established to monitor, develop
and promote maritime activities,
DMCA has served as a platform of
excellence and quality. Boosting its
infrastructure, operations and logistics
services to effectively offer
investment opportunities, the company
has bolstered Dubai’s competitiveness
at both regional and global
levels. While the company maintains
its pursuit of developing world-class
regulations and guidelines, it continues
to raise the industry bar accordingly.
Operational Efficiency & Elite
Safety
Due in large part to DMCA’s relentless
efforts, 2018 was a fruitful year
for Dubai as the authority revealed
significant improvement across maritime
traffic inspections conducted in
Dubai’s waters. Consequently, this
positive performance resulted in an
increase of marine, coastal, commercial,
tourism, sports and leisure related
activities.
Amer Ali, Executive Director of
DMCA stated, “Operational efficiency,
safe navigation, and overall maritime
safety are top priorities for the
Dubai maritime sector. In partnership
with both the public and private sectors,
we will keep working to improve
all aspects of the maritime sector to
ensure it remains a key pillar of the
Emirates’ sustainable growth and diversification
plan.”
With Dubai Plan 2021 on the horizon,
DMCA is determined to reinforce
the Emirate as a major hub for
the global economy. Furthermore,
DMCA has actively promoted insurance
to increase competitiveness and
attractiveness. Ali explained, “Insurance
is a main pillar of growth which
ensures protection and coverage in
case of an accident or emergency.”
Ali further added, “The industry
is becoming increasingly aware that
this is an integral aspect of maritime,
as several local insurance companies
have begun providing a range of comprehensive
and high-valued services
for private and commercial pleasure
crafts to cover crew and passengers.
This has fortified Dubai’s excellent
standards for a safe maritime environment.”
Infinite Innovation & Proficient
Services
Recently, DMCA has increased its
presence at industry-relevant events
to successively elevate Dubai’s pioneering
position on the global maritime
map. This strategic approach
has enabled the company to realize
its vision of raising maritime safety
awareness, increasing education
campaigns and facilitating coordination
between various stakeholders.
In particular, DMCA made a very
strong impression at the latest edition
of the Dubai International Boat
Show (DIBS 2019) with its innovative
excellence. DMCA introduced a
large number of qualitative e-service
platforms like Mobile Smart Services,
Dubai Maritime Virtual Cluster, and
Sea Dubai to bolster marine innovation
and smart transformation.
Ali explained, “In conjunction with
the celebration of UAE innovation
month, these initiatives promote innovation
as the cornerstone of DM-
CA’s ideals and operations to truly
reflect the slogan ‘Innovation starts
with you.’ Similarly, we are guided
by the wise and insightful vision of
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin
Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President
and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler
of Dubai, who once said: “UAE has
adopted innovation build a sustainable
future.’”
DMCA’s Smart Mobile Services
have been at the forefront of its innovative
marine initiatives. Furthermore,
it has contributed to achieving
intelligent transformation and facilitating
access to government services
to the benefit of customers and the
welfare of the maritime community.
A smart car equipped with stateof-the-art
technological innovations
to deliver mobile services; It aims to
reach customers everywhere in the
emirate, providing smart services to
the largest segment of the maritime
community.
The series of smart and innovative
initiatives, which DMCA highlighted
at DIBS 2019, have aligned with its
objective to support and enhance
the maritime sector as a key pillar
of economic diversification. Likewise,
through this creativity, DMCA has
demonstrated its ability to enhance
competitiveness, attractiveness, and
comprehensiveness of the maritime
community to elevate Dubai to rank
as the world’s leading maritime.
Fruitful Future
Along with DMCA’s many initiatives,
its collaborative efforts with
the government and private sectors
have translated into Dubai becoming
a leading regional and global center
that provides best-in-class class
maritime services. A recent report issued
by Menon Economics and DNV
GL, ranked Dubai 9th in the world’s
top maritime capitals in 2019, up
from its 10th place rank in 2017.
Ali said, “By adaption of innovative
thinking and policies focusing on
sustainable development in the city,
Dubai has extended the capacity of
its coast from only 60 kilometers
to 1000 kilometers. Along with our
many initiatives, this aligns with the
Fifty-Year-Charter to develop Dubai
and guarantee an even better future
of economic prosperity, growth, diversity
and competitiveness.”
Ali continued saying, “The local
maritime sector is home to over
7400 active companies that produce
over 13000 activities and create
76000 jobs. This has equally contributed
to Dubai’s ranking as first in
the Middle East, as it pertains to the
most attractive maritime capitals of
2019. Moving forward, we will do our
utmost to strengthen the Emirate’s
bid to become considered among the
top five of the world’s best maritime
centers by 2024.”
