Managing Director
of MaK Middle East and Asia
MaK Middle East continues to grow as
parent Caterpillar Motoren strives to lead in
green and eco-efficient engine manufacturing
Locally based and internationally supported, MaK Middle East is firing on all cylinders to pave the way with its
innovative Service offerings, new engine technology support and high safety standards.
By Effat Mostafa
MaK Middle East LLC, a whollyowned
Caterpillar company established
in Dubai in 2017, has achieved
significant success since setting
up its headquarters in the Emirates.
With the support of the USD
$54 billion corporation, now ranked
#65 on the Fortune 500, MaK Middle
East has solidified its presence
regionally and is achieving strong
customer recognition. Alan Naisby,
Managing Director of MaK Middle
East and Asia, has led the efforts to
bolster the company’s growth.
Naisby stated, “The beauty of being
part of a major corporation with
strong cash flow means we can make
strategic investments in the industries
we see value in participating
in. The ability to invest in the cyclical
maritime industry at a less than
buoyant time, reflects our long-term
perspective and comes with the expectation
of stronger returns later in
the cycle.”
Recognizing the region’s need for
technical support services, MaK Middle
East has been able to secure a
strong client base appreciative of
the troubleshooting, engine health
checks and turnkey overhauls provided
by the Dubai operation. As a
result, the standing of the MaK and
Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) brands
in the region has been further enhanced.
State of the art Facilities, Superior
Services
With geographical coverage focused
on the nine countries of Bahrain,
Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman,
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the
UAE, MaK Middle East saw strong
benefits in establishing its Middle
East headquarters in the Emirates,
investing USD $5 million in phase 1
alone. Naisby clarified saying, “These
countries represent significant population
areas for our engines and gensets,
whether it be in the marine,
Oil & Gas or power plant segments.
MaK Middle East Top Management
We felt that basing our operations
in Dubai would put us in an easy to
do business location to cover the region.”
Naisby further added, “Though
part of Caterpillar’s global footprint is
a branch here in Jebel Ali, we opted
against the Free Trade Zone. After
examining alternatives and speaking
to peers, Dubai Maritime City (DMC)
felt like a natural home and the best
place for our business model. So far,
we haven’t been disappointed with
the level of comfort and strong relations
we’ve built with DMC’s leaders.”
With much of MaK Middle East’s
work consisting of service engineers
conducting work on the UAE mainland
and Saudi Arabia and bringing
used components back to its workshop
for overhaul, the company’s
choice of location has been an enabler
for its component service exchange
program. In many ways the Dubai
strategy has replicated the success
created in other major marine hubs
such as Shanghai, Guangzhou and
Singapore where sister company
MaK Asia supports MaK, and EMD
customers operating in Asia.
Naisby commented saying, “Our
service team is made up of mechanical
experts, electrical experts, specialists
in EMD and a qualified team
of technicians. The Dubai Maritime
City workshop’s component overhaul
capabilities and on site storage of exchange
units has been very popular
with our customers operating in remote
locations such as the Caspian
or West coast of Africa where the
highest standards of local workshop
aren’t available.
He further mentioned, “When customers
want speedy, quality repairs,
we can promptly send out cylinder
heads, fuel pumps, injectors and
turbocharger cartridges to a vessel
and our service team will follow and
complete the overhaul in 2-3 weeks,
with the worn units being returned
to our workshop for refurbishment
then placed on standby for the next
customer overhaul job. It’s a fast, efficient
service offering made possible
by our significant investment in service
exchange components for our
various engine models.”
Innovative Green Solutions
Meanwhile, parent company Caterpillar
Motoren based in Kiel, Germany
has been developing dual fuel engines
that have already been seen in
the Middle East. Liquid Natural Gas
as a growing maritime fuel has been
