a major focus of the company’s engineering
development work in support
of a greener marine power footprint.
An example of this can be seen in the
2016-built AIDAprima, a cruise ship
with a weekly stop in Dubai that is
powered by four MaK engines, one
of which is its patented VM 46 DF
(dual fuel) engine. As part of the gas
powered trend in cruise ships, the
latest AIDA vessel, AIDAnova was
launched last year in Europe with
four dual-fuel engines demonstrating
even greater environmental and
operational efficiency.
Naisby said, “If you look at the next
generation of cruise ships, there is a
significant order backlog in European
yards with a high percentage of those
vessels dual-fuel powered. This trend
towards a smaller environmental
footprint appeals to consumers and
is something we foresaw and have
been pouring research and development
investment dollars into for the
last decade.” Foreseeing trends appears
to be nothing new for MaK,
something that is paying dividends
with IMO 2020 quickly approaching.
With the MaK population and
ownership loyalty very strong in Caterpillar
Motoren’s Northern European
base, the need to identify, develop
and deliver to the market technology
solutions to meet sulfur compliance
regulations came early. Naisby elaborated
saying, “In some Emissions
Control Areas (ECA)regions like the
North Sea and Baltic, 0.1% sulfur
content has been a requirement
since 2015 so we are used to clients
needing environmental alternatives.”
He further added, “We anticipate
most existing HFO engines will use
some form of scrubbers to meet
2020 regulations. However, in terms
of new builds, liquified natural gas
(LNG) interest has been on the increase
from operators in a number of
marine vessel segments since 2015
and we expect this to continue. Consequently,
we are continuing to develop
our dual fuel engine offerings
to meet these requirements.”
Future Outlook
While the niche cruise segment is
strong, the regionally large Offshore
segment is undergoing significant
financial challenges but MaK Middle
East has successfully supported Offshore
operators working for Saudi
Aramco and ADNOC Offshore. Naisby
explained, “Demand from Offshore
customers has remained strong for a
broad range of our Services. While
Singapore operators moving into the
Arabian Gulf have created an oversupply
situation not appreciated by
all, this has been a positive for us
as we have historically worked with
them through our MaK Asia entity in
Singapore and it has been a seamless
transition to working with them
through MaK Middle East.”
Naisby further added, “We have
been able to align with these customers
and our regional population
has actually increased. Though we
started strong in 2018, we forecast
2019 to be even better due
to greater presence, recognition of
our physical facility and the range
of Services we can offer as the engine
manufacturer. Additionally, the
one-on-one communication we’ve
established with some 200 customers,
participation in conferences and
advertisement through our website,
public relations, and media outlets
has significantly contributed to this
projection.”
He concluded saying, “With a direct
service model for MaK business in
China, Singapore and now the Middle
East, we are able to deliver a consistent
level of Services to customers.
Since we have a follow-the-customer
business model we have also been
called upon to carry out complex repair
jobs on the West Coast of Africa
in countries including Senegal, Angola,
Nigeria and Ghana. Regardless
of where we operate, our top priority
will always be to work safely. Safety
is the number one pillar of Caterpillar
and our recipe is constantly evolving
recognizing that a lack of safety can
cause loss of life and inefficiency. Ultimately,
we want to take our internal
culture, and extend it outwards for
the entire industry’s benefit.”
Though we started strong in 2018, we
forecast 2019 to be even better due to greater
presence and recognition of our physical facility"
