Invited to make new work about Brighton, Kawauchi was immediately
drawn to the spectacle of flocking starlings at Brighton Pier. Here during the
winter months at dusk, the birds gather in tens of thousands, wheeling around
to create a mesmerizing cloud called a murmuration. Kawauchi is fascinated
by the ephemeral nature of this phenomenon and, continuing with
the theme of the flock, she has also trailed groups of people through the city.
Bastille Day, Paris, 1958; a wind-blown couple dances in the street on the
Quai de Bourbon, isolated and oblivious to the derelict buildings beside
them. This well-known image by documentary filmmaker and photographer
Van der Keuken was first published in 1964; the discovery of 32 negatives
from the same shoot informs this book and exhibition at Amsterdam’s
FOAM. Groups of girls socialise; other couples dance and drift off; children
laugh; chance passers-by take centre stage. As the image’s context is revealed
in dynamic sequence, Van der Keuken’s perception, processes and choices
are uncovered, evincing the cinematic qualities and capturing of motion
that concerned him throughout his later career.
When recession-plagued New York City abandoned its industrial base in the
1970s, performance artists, photographers, and filmmakers found their own
mixed uses for the city’s run-down lofts, abandoned piers, vacant lots, and
deserted streets. The book focuses on several important photographic series:
Peter Hujar’s 1976 nighttime photographs of Manhattan’s West Side; Alvin
Baltrop’s Hudson River pier photographs from 1975–1985, most of which
have never before been shown or published; David Wojnarowicz’s Rimbaud
in New York (1978–1979), the first of Wojnarowicz’s works to be published;
and several of Zoe Leonard’s photographic projects from the late 1990s on.
The book includes a chronology of the policy decisions and developments
that altered the face of New York City from 1950 to the present; an autobiographical
story by David Wojnarowicz; and essays by Johanna Burton, Lytle
Shaw, Juan Suarez, and the exhibition’s curators, Lynne Cooke and Douglas
