CABE Margate
CABE also invested in Margate. In 2008 a
small grant was made to allow an evaluation
study of the potential for a new theme park
on the Dreamland Amusement park site and
the creation of a ‘museum’ celebrating youth
culture in the 1935 Dreamland Cinema. The
evaluation was positive and therefore in 2010
a further £3.7m was granted.
Dreamland and Arlington House
The essential repairs to the Dreamland Cinema
have been completed but due to legal
problems the idea of the heritage amusement
park has been delayed. However, the local authority
should complete its purchase of the
site this year and the park should open within
a couple of years. This will help to bring a
broad section of the public to Margate eager
to enjoy old fairground rides and indulge in a
nostalgic trip back to their youth.
The Dreamland Park will be an important
part of Margate’s reconnection with a traditional
holiday market, albeit a market perhaps
of 40-60 year old visitors trying to relive their
teenage years, but it is also trying to create a
new market for its charms.
Turner Painting
However, as early as 1994 the idea of a gallery
to celebrate the work of the famous landscape
and history painter Joseph Mallord William

romantic story of Turner’s connection with
Margate is that he spent time there when he
was young and fell in love with the astonishing
skies and seascapes. The reality is perhaps
more prosaic - Turner developed a relationship
with his Margate landlady, the twice-widowed
Sophia Booth and was, like many other
holidaymakers, enjoying a regular, annual holiday
romance.
Turner Contemporary
The new gallery would stage exhibitions by
other artists connected with Kent, as well as
shows featuring works by contemporary artists.
very popular with visitors and residents, especially
with a new wave of residents who are
being attracted to the town.
Old Town Regeneration
Even before the gallery had been built, the
town was already attracting new residents who
were identifying with the town’s artistic heritage.
The advent of the Internet means that
many businesses that had to be located near
their customers, and therefore often in London,
could now be in more remote locations,
including at seaside resorts such as Margate.
Local and regional government bodies, English
Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund
have put money towards grants to refurbish
historic buildings in the Old Town and these
are proving to be popular with people wishing
