elieve that each one of these examples will
at one time or another, probably also become
heritage. It is a question of time. And it is a
question of also making the choice of knowing
what do we keep and what don’t we keep,
and how do we enhance its value in the eyes of
the tourists. We enhance it because each one
of these things, each one of these places needs
to be sold differently because you’re selling to
different people and you have to keep this in
mind.
Now whatever the resort, everyone is convinced
that their destination is exceptional. To
a certain extent it probably is, but the tourist
doesn’t know that. You have to convince the
tourist that this is what he or she wants. Let’s
now turn our attention to what you’re waiting
for, Deauville, knowing that I’m not an expert
in seaside resorts, that I work more on
cultural heritage and selling culture, cultural
tourism products, mostly in cities, but also in
the mountainside. I will therefore give you different
views of how to use your heritage.
Now Deauville. I’m going to show you a litt-

when it began to capitalize on its name as a
seabathing resort. Deauville is what we call an
exclusive destination, but not in the sense of
‘bling-bling’, if you’ve heard the expression, or

established reputation and money that they are
used to. It is famous for its boardwalk, as I’ll
call it. It’s also famous for racing and raising
horses. This, of course, is the famous board-

made Deauville famous. These are the original
seabathing structures and this is the Villa
Strassburger with an emphasis on architecture.
What is the role of architecture in Deauville?
This is what we’re going to try and have a look
at. This is part of the casino, this is a public
building, and this again is a view of the Villa
Strassburger that changed hands between important
people many times.
So now let’s take our trip from the station
onwards, and discover that heritage is a mix
of architecture, a mix of culinary experience.
And above all it has to contribute to give destination
a unique identity and allow it to be
ville
is concerned, I think I shall try and explain
things in three areas.
First of all: How do we use architectural heritage?
We use it as part of whole, that is to say that
in order to give the destination character, you
have to think in terms of protecting your heritage,
of promoting your heritage, and above
all of projecting yourself and your valuable
parts and possessions into the future. So heritage
is about conservation and this is what
Deauville has achieved. Namely it has achieved
this conservation by concentrating on special
legislation that has been set up for this. The
French are very fond of using abbreviations.
This is why they have the ZPPAUP and the
MVAP. Instead of giving you the whole term I
shall explain that the two are simply legislative
measures that make sure that it’s not only the
building itself that is looked after, protected.
Instead it is the whole area. You make sure
that you don’t pull down certain houses and
build up something that is going to hide the
building that is in front of you. That you don’t
have anything that is going to clash, that you
don’t have an architecture that is going to clash
with what exists, and that as a whole you’re
providing a coherent environment. Now the
