Das Department of Economics besteht aus zwei Lehrstühlen, an die eine Reihe
renommierter Ökonomen aus Wissenschaft und Praxis als externe Lehrbeauftragte
angebunden sind. Die Arbeit des Departments gliedert sich einerseits in die grundständige
Ausbildung der Studierenden an der ebs und andererseits in mannigfaltige
Forschungsaktivitäten. Inhaltliche Schwerpunkte werden auf Internationales
Management, die Europäische Wirtschaftspolitik, Governance-Fragen, die
Internationale Politische Ökonomie und weltwirtschaftliche Fragestellungen gelegt.
Der europäische Integrationsprozess ist gegenwärtig der zentrale Schwerpunkt der
Forschungstätigkeit von Prof. Ahrens. Das Ziel besteht darin, die Rolle der Ordnungsund
Wettbewerbspolitik zu untersuchen und zu überprüfen, ob nationale wirtschaftspolitische
Traditionen den Integrationsprozess hemmen oder unterstützen. Im
Rahmen des Projektes „Vertiefung versus Erweiterung der EU“ werden nicht nur
polit-ökonomische Aspekte der Osterweiterung diskutiert, sondern zudem eine clubtheoretische
Analyse der europäischen Integration durchgeführt, die dazu beitragen
soll, ordnungspolitische Handlungsempfehlungen hinsichtlich der institutionellen
Absicherung des Integrationsprozesses abzuleiten.
Das unter der Leitung von Prof. Caspers durchgeführte Forschungsprojekt
„Wissensnetzwerke“ wurde im Frühjahr 2004 mit der Publikation des Buches
„Interorganisatorische Wissensnetzwerke. Mit Kooperationen zum Erfolg“
(Herausgeber: Rolf Caspers, Nils Bickhoff, Thomas Bieger) abgeschlossen. An
diesem von Roland Berger Strategy Consultants unterstützten Projekt waren Dr.
Petra Kreis-Hoyer und Jutta Grünberg-Bochard, M.A., vom Lehrstuhl für
Weltwirtschaft und Internationales Management maßgeblich beteiligt. Als nächstes
Forschungsprojekt wird im Herbst 2004 das Thema „Wachstumsstrategien“ in
Angriff genommen. Erste Ergebnisse einer empirischen Untersuchung über
„Internationalisierung in Emerging markets – Wie Unternehmen wachsen können“
liegen bereits vor.

sich an Praktiker und Wissenschaftler auf der Suche nach tragfähigen
Konzepten für Wissenskooperationen in der Form
organisationsübergreifender Netzwerke.

The Department of Economics comprises two chairs with which a team of renowned
economists – academics as well as practising – are associated as external lecturers.
The work of the department is split between the teaching of ebs students and a
range of varied research activities. The department’s areas of special interest are
international management, European economic policy, issues of governance, the
international political economy and world economic issues.
The main focus of Prof. Ahrens’ research activity at the present time is the European
integration process. The purpose of his work is to investigate the role of regulatory
and competition policy and to examine whether national traditions of economic
policy are inhibiting or promoting the integration process. Within the framework of a
project entitled “Consolidation versus Expansion of the EU” not only are the politicoeconomic
aspects of the expansion eastwards being examined, but a club theory
analysis of European integration is also being carried out. This is expected to play a
role in the development of recommendations for regulatory policy action with respect
to the institutional safeguarding of the integration process.
The research project “Knowledge Networks”, led by Prof. Caspers, concluded in
spring 2004 with the publication of the book “Interorganisatorische
Wissensnetzwerke. Mit Kooperationen zum Erfolg” (Inter-organisational Knowledge
Networks. Success through Cooperation, editors: Rolf Caspers, Nils Bickhoff,
Thomas Bieger). An important contribution to this project, which was supported by
Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, was made by Dr. Petra Kreis-Hoyer and Jutta
Grünberg-Bochard MA of the Chair for World Economics and International
Management. The next research project, in Autumn 2004, will examine the topic of
“Growth Strategies”. The initial results of an empirical study entitled
“Internationalisation in Emerging Markets – How Companies can Grow” are already
available.
