Prof. Ulrich Hommel Ph.D.
Das Motto, das der ebs Jahrgang 2004 für seine Diplomfeier wählte, hieß: „Europa
erweitert seine Grenzen. Wir wachsen mit.“ Dieser Satz beschreibt in treffender
Weise den Wandel in Politik und Gesellschaft in den letzten vier Jahren. Unter
diesem Motto haben wir auch Forschung und Lehre erweitert und aktualisiert.
Unsere Studierenden sind damit bestens ausgerüstet für ihren Weg in die
Führungsetagen internationaler Unternehmen.
Die Vermittlung von funktional-methodischem Fachwissen ist nur ein Aspekt. Durch
interkulturelle Erfahrungen beim Studium an einer unserer über 90
Partnerhochschulen und durch die aktive Förderung der emotionalen und sozialen
Intelligenz bilden wir junge Führungspersönlichkeiten ganzheitlich aus.
Indes haben sich unsere politischen und wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen
gewandelt. Die Euphorie der 90er Jahre ist in der deutschen Bevölkerung durch
Pessimismus und Zukunftsangst abgelöst worden. Deutschland muss sich zunehmend
von seinen ökonomischen Wunschwelten verabschieden.
Als Deutschlands älteste private Wissenschaftliche Hochschule versuchen wir
dennoch mit dem Optimismus voranzugehen, den unser Land dringend benötigt.
Unser Marktumfeld ist geprägt durch zunehmenden Wettbewerb, ausgelöst durch
die geographische Ausweitung des Bildungsmarktes und die Deregulierung der
öffentlich-rechtlichen Hochschulen.
Um unseren nationalen Spitzenrang zu halten und unser internationales Renommee
auszuweiten, haben wir im letzten Jahr eine Reihe wichtiger Schritte eingeleitet:
Wir stehen an der Spitze der deutschen Bologna-Bewegung und stellen zum Herbst
das Diplom-Programm auf die international anerkannten Bachelor-of-Science-
Abschlüsse in European und General Management um. Eine detaillierte
Beschreibung unserer neuen Studienprogramme finden Sie in diesem Heft.
Wir haben durch konsequente Erweiterung unserer Fakultät und durch die
Einführung eines Promotionsstudiums unsere Reputation als Forschungsinstitution
gesteigert.
Durch die Einführung von Executive-Master-Programmen und die Stärkung unserer
Fortbildungsaktivitäten können wir zukünftig als Dienstleister in allen Bereichen
betriebswirtschaftlicher Lehre und Karriere auftreten.
Mehr Wettbewerb hilft dem Bildungsstandort Deutschland. Wir sind dafür gut
gerüstet und arbeiten weiter daran, unsere Hochschule zu einer der besten ihres
Faches in Europa zu machen. Ich hoffe, die nächsten sechs Monate werden für Sie
genauso inspirierend and reich an neuen Ideen sein wie für uns an der ebs!

A Note from the Rector
Prof. Ulrich Hommel Ph.D.
The catch phrase, the graduates of 2004 have chosen for their graduation celebrations
was „Europe is growing. We grow with it.” These words capture precisely
the changes in politics and society over the last four years. They also convey the
changes in teaching and research at our school. Herewith our students are well
equipped for their way into the top management of international companies.
The transfer of specialized functional knowledge is only one aspect. Through
intercultural experience while studying at one of our 90 partner schools and by the
conscious promotion of emotional and social intelligence we educate all-round,
balanced leadership personalities.
Meanwhile, lasting changes have been taking place in the basic social and economic
conditions. The euphoria of the 1990s has been stifled by cynicism and the fear of
an uncertain future. More and more, Germany has to come out of its economic
dream world.
As Germany’s oldest private university, we are trying to move forward with the
optimism desperately needed in this country. Our market environment is increasingly
marked by tough competition, generated by the geographical expansion of the EU
and the accession of new members, the harmonization of education in Europe and
the deregulation of state universities.
In order to retain our leading position and to extend our international reputation, we
have taken a series of important steps: As a prime-mover in the German Bologna
movement, we have already begun transforming our diploma programmes, this
autumn, into the internationally recognised and quantifiable Bachelor and Master
degrees: the Bachelor of Science in General Management and in European
Management. You will find a detailed description of our new programme in this issue.
Through a consistent policy of faculty extension and the introduction of a doctoral
programme, we have boosted our reputation as a research institution.
With the introduction of Executive Master Programmes and the strengthening of our
management development activities, we will assume the role as leading provider of
education and development in all areas and at all stages of professional business
management.
More competition can only help Germany as a location for learning. We are well
equipped to meet this challenge and are already working towards our goal to
become one of the best in our field in Europe.
I hope the next six months will be as inspiring and alive with new ideas for you as
they will be for the ebs.
