Prof. Dr. Karl-Werner Schulte war Mitorganisator und Redner auf der 5. Jahreskonferenz der African Real
Estate Society (AfRES), die vom 11. bis 13. März 2004 in Kampala/Uganda stattfand. Die Konferenz wurde
von ca. 100 Teilnehmern besucht. Im Eröffnungsvortrag des zuständigen Ministers, Hon. E. F. Babu, forderte
dieser den privaten Immobiliensektor auf, eine stärkere Rolle bei der Entwicklung der Länder Ostafrikas einzunehmen.
Thematische Schwerpunkte des Kongresses bildeten die Erhebung der afrikanischen
Grundsteuer, die Genauigkeit der Immobilienbewertung und Fragen der Berufsethik.
Ernst & Young Visiting Professorship
an Glenn R. Mueller
Glenn R. Mueller Ph.D., Professor am Real Estate Department der renommierten Johns Hopkins University
in Baltimore / USA, übernimmt im Wintersemester die Ernst & Young Visiting Professorship am ebs
Department of Real Estate. Prof. Mueller verfügt über 27 Jahre „real estate industry experience“ einschließlich
20 Jahren Immobilienforschung. Er ist Co-Editor des Journal of Real Estate Portfolio
Management und war 1997/98 Präsident der ARES American Real Estate Society. Anlässlich der 20. ARES
Jahreskonferenz wurde ihm die höchste Auszeichnung verliehen: Der James A. Graaskamp Award for
2004. Das ebs Department of Real Estate ist stolz, diese exzellente Persönlichkeit für Lehre und
Forschung gewonnen zu haben.
In diesem Jahr führte die ebs gemeinsam mit der TU Darmstadt eine
Prüfungsleistung durch, die in dieser Form in der deutschen Hochschullandschaft
einmalig sein dürfte. 20 Architekturstudenten von Prof. Johann Eisele (Fachgebiet
Entwerfen und Baugestaltung) und 30 BWL-Studenten von Prof. Stephan Bone-
Winkel (Stiftungslehrstuhl Immobilien-Projektentwicklung) haben in 10 Teams zwei
große Entwicklungsareale in Frankfurt bearbeitet, ein Nutzungskonzept entwickelt
und dafür eine Machbarkeitsstudie durchgeführt. Der Weg, den das Department of
Real Estate im Rahmen des Fachs „Immobilienökonomie“ geht, besteht in der interdisziplinären
Verknüpfung der Volkswirtschaftslehre, Rechtswissenschaften,
Stadtplanung, Architektur und des Ingenieurwesens auf Basis der Betriebswirtschaftslehre.
Um dieser Vieldimensionalität von Immobilien in Theorie und Praxis Rechnung zu
tragen, sollte das interdisziplinäre Arbeiten geübt und die dafür notwendigen
Prozesse, Instrumente und Techniken vermittelt werden. Für die beiden besten
Teams hat die Grundstückseigentümerin eine Reise nach New York City ausgelobt.
Neben den erstaunlich professionellen Ergebnissen haben die Studenten insbesondere
das „doing“ gelobt, die gemeinsame Projekterfahrung, das gegenseitige
Lernen und das interdisziplinäre Arbeiten an realen Problemen. So wird es den
Studenten ermöglicht, schon in der Ausbildung ein Verständnis für die einzelnen
Disziplinen und ein Gefühl für das Management der Schnittstellen zu erlangen.

5. Annual conference of the African
Real Estate Society
Prof. Dr. Karl-Werner Schulte was co-organiser of, and speaker at, the 5th annual conference of the African
Real Estate Society (AfRES) held in Kampala/Uganda between 11th and 13th March 2004. The conference
was attended by around 100 delegates. In his opening address, the Hon. E. F. Babu, the relevant minister,
urged the private real estate sector to take a greater role in the development of the countries of East Africa.
The thematic foci of the conference were the imposition of an African land tax, the accuracy of real estate
valuations and professional ethics.

Glenn R. Mueller PhD, who teaches in the Real Estate Department
of the renowned Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore / USA, has
accepted the Ernst & Young Visiting Professorship of the ebs Department of Real Estate for the winter
semester. Prof. Mueller has over 27 years of “real estate industry experience” including 20 years in real
estate research. He is co-editor of the Journal of Real Estate Portfolio Management and in 1997/98 was
President of ARES (American Real Estate Society). At the 20th ARES annual conference he was awarded the
society’s highest honour: the James A. Graaskamp Award for 2004. The ebs Department of Real Estate is
proud to have attracted such an outstanding figure to contribute to its teaching and research activities.

This year, ebs, in conjunction with TU Darmstadt, organised an examination module
thought to be unique among German universities. 20 architecture students under the
supervision of Prof. Johann Eisele of TU Darmstadt (Faculty of Architectural Design)
and 30 Business Administration students under Prof. Stephan Bone-Winkel (Chair of
Real Estate Development) worked in ten teams on two major Frankfurt development
sites, developing an exploitation concept and carrying out a feasibility study. For the
subject area “Real Estate Management”, the Department of Real Estate at ebs
adopts an interdisciplinary approach combining aspects of economics, law, town
planning, architecture and engineering on a solid business administration basis.
In order to do justice to the multi-dimensionality of both the theory and practice of
real estate, it is important that students work on interdisciplinary projects and
acquire an understanding of the relevant processes, tools and techniques. The site
owners have offered a trip to New York City as a prize for the two best teams. The
results were astonishingly professional and students praised the practical aspects of
the project, the experience it gave them of collaboratively methods and the
opportunity to learn from each other and tackle real problems in an interdisciplinary
manner. Projects of this kind help students to develop an understanding of the
different disciplines and a feeling for the management of the interfaces between
these different areas prior to embarking upon their professional careers.
