onmental protection projects initiated by businessesthrough numerous consultancy services and subsidies. The name UmweltPartner, said Anja Hajduk, hadalready become a well-known term, as many companieswere using the UmweltPartner logo in their ownpromotional material. Senator Hajduk: “Businessescommitted to environment are demonstrating thatenvironmental protection and commercial activitiescan go together, and that it can even enhance the competitivenessof a business. In doing so, the businessesare making an important contribution to climate protection.”The Chairman of the Management Board ofHHLA, Klaus-Dieter Peters, said: “Doing business in asustainable manner has been part of daily practice forover 120 years at HHLA. Anyone in the business ofbuilding and operating cargo terminals, hinterlandnetworks and logistics premises must look at the biggerpicture and plan business activities with a view tolong-term success. In terms of climate protection, wemake use of technologically appropriate and efficientways of reducing CO2 emissions. To this end, we arealso trialling innovative technologies in order to movetowards making greater use of renewable energies inthe port. Sustainable use of energy, for example, notonly reduces CO2 emission, it also cuts a company’soperating costs, resulting in both economic and ecologicalbenefits. Furthermore, HHLA is investing in theefficient utilisation of terminal spaces, and our businessmodel combines transport modalities such ascontainer ships and railways into an economically andecologically appropriate chain. As the first companyworldwide, HHLA is currently testing a van carrier(or straddle carrier, a vehicle used to move and stackcontainers at terminal sites) fitted with what is knownas U-Cap technology. In this new technology, 200 doublelayercondensers provide intermediate energy storage(e.g., during braking) and then release this energy tomeet subsequent energy requirement until the dieselelectricgenerator resumes full output. This allows vancarriers with diesel-electric propulsion to save 10 percent of fuel per hour. To achieve accession to theEnvironment Partnership, HHLA Holding and elevenof its subsidiaries submitted a range of measures to anaudit. Together, these measures result in an annualreduction in CO2 emissions of 9,000 tons. And these are the new Environment Partners:• Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG• HHLA Container Terminals GmbH• HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort GmbH• HHLA Container-Terminal Altenwerder GmbH• HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai GmbH• HHLA Logistics GmbH• HHLA Logistics Altenwerder GmbH• HHLA Frucht- und Kühl-Zentrum GmbH• Hansaport Hafenbetriebsgesellschaft mbH• POLZUG Intermodal GmbH• CTD Container-Transport-Dienst GmbH• UNIKAI Lagerei- und Speditionsgesellschaft mbHPORT OF HAMBURG MAGAZINE 3/0927
