Der Gesamt umschlag vonKaffee im Hamburger Hafen betrug 2008 rund 1,21 Mio. t.24New hub concept for green-coffee logisticsgenerates additional coffee handling volumefor HamburgIn a close collaboration involving a planning phase andnumerous workshops over a period of three-quarters ofa year, the companies Decotrade AG, Zug (CH) andNKG Kala Hamburg GmbH developed a concept forthe optimisation of the warehousing operations of threeSara Lee coffee roasting plants in Northern and EasternEurope in the year 2008. The concept has now largelybeen implemented. Usually every roasting facility forwhich Decotrade handles the purchasing of raw commoditieshas its own warehousing facilities and produces itsown coffee blends for its own markets, right through toproducing the specific end products. Under the newcooperative agreement, NKG Kala Hamburg will coordinatethe entire flow of raw materials for Northern andEastern Europe, previously handled via Antwerp. Theservice includes taking over the container and truckingmanagement, all warehousing operations, the productionof blends and components according to the specificationsfor the individual locations, quality control, andthe handling of customs and taxation matters. The newagreement with Decotrade will generate an annualhandling volume of between 60,000 and 80,000 tons ofgreen coffee for NGK Kala in Hamburg. The hubconcept revolves around an integrated, IT-based merchandisemanagement system covering all the participantsin the value-adding chain that ensures maximumtransparency, responsiveness and flexibility. The fiveyearcooperative agreement entered into by the twocontractual parties in Hamburg is an indication of thetwo companies’ intention to embark on a long-termstrategic partnership. In the global coffee trade, the Portof Hamburg is of central importance as the biggestEuropean port for imports of green coffee, as a hub forshipments to Scandinavia, and as a gateway to and fromCentral and Eastern Europe, Austria and Switzerland.Total coffee transhipments through the Port of Hamburgfor 2008 amounted to around 1.21 million tons.PORT OF HAMBURG MAGAZINE 3/0933
