Arnošt HrabalArnošt Hrabal (4. 12. 1886 Buchlovice – 30.12. 1969 Buchlovice). Grafic designer as wellas clergyman, brought up in a harmonious physicaland psychological environment with familyof deep religious faith. Time spend with hisfather poring over the old bible’s wood-etchingprints made quite an impression on the youngboy. Together with further members of his family,markedly uncle Jan and Lukáš, Hrabal sangat church and the impressions made by hisyouth of wood-carving, music and nature fascinatedhim during his whole life. The Olomouctheological faculty features as the artist’s academicjourney starting point after graduatingUher. Hradište’s grammar school. From1906 to 1910 he studied theology continuing toserve as a chaplain in the furthest corners ofthe country. Choice of location was influencedby the occasional character conflict betweenhim and the clergy, with his innocent, directways not always appreciated. 1912 in Vienna’sgraphic school contributed to Hrabal’s fruitbearing spending two years with wood-carvingas main discipline.Returning to his academic art studies at theclose of the war, he studied under prof. JakubObrovsky at Prague’s academy and prof. Hofbauerat Vienna’s school of graphics for onesemester and three months accordingly. Ina clerical sphere, he served in the towmsof Libina, Malín, Branná, Šilperk, Křenov,Ostravice, Véska just to name a few up to theoccupation of the border regions. Work duringthe years 1924 to 1927 coincided with thenew friendship with Jakub Deml and JaroslavDurych taking place in the intelectual scene ofTřebovicka castle whose proprietar attractedacademics, artists and scientists alike.Vienna’s Künstlerhaus in the year 1925 wasthe artist’s first graphic show venue givena critique by the prestigious magazine Die graphischenKünste. Further shows were establishedas member of SVUM in Hodonín (city artistassociation). Cyklus 22 remains his most prizedpiece of work at that time, a 1926 wood--carving under the title Wood. The surroundingmountains and forests bewitched the artistwith the following quote capturing his passion,„Under the Praděd mountains I witnessthe pure grandiosity and netural energy of theancient forest. I studied the organisms of treeswhere I’m familiar with each one’s form fromgood to bad up to the tragegy of burial.“The artist asked many questions about humanexistence through his application of his graphicmedium. People’s existence and connectionwith nature looking for answers through ethicaldevotion. We can paraphrase his work asevents, happenings and human relation envelopedin mystery towards a meditative existence.Over thirty books display Hrabal’s illustrationsin pride of place not forgetting the graphicwork he created alongside this discipline.53
