» The greatest challenge is always the first curve«
Champagne, jewellery and sunshine – the White Turf offers
much more. Above all, the much-admired snow-gladiators
of which Franco Moro is the most infamous. He is
a ski instructor and his family used to own a horse-drawn
carriage business; perfect requirements for skijoring.
Whenever he glides across the frozen Lake St. Moritz on
one of the three racing Sundays, everyone recognizes him
and seeks to be as close as possible to the action, the athletes,
the horses, and, of course, the winner. Franco Moro
has already been the first to cross the finish line here fourteen
times. And still he is very modest: According to
Moro, the driver influences only about twenty percent of
the race, the best horses make up for the remaining eighty
percent. The challenge is to find a way to optimize energy
reserves. It depends on whether a sprinter or stipler horse
is accustomed to long tracks. The time for which the skier
and the horse have to get accustomed to each other is very
short. However, »harmony must develop as fast as possible«,
claims Moro. Teamwork is called for in order to
get accustomed to and lead one another. Humans and animals
must unite their strengths. After two or three years
the horse will be replaced, thus »the first encounter is always
special: I always go towards the animal, stroke it a
little, and see if it is proud, robust, and muscular.«
During the race, »the greatest challenge is always the first
curve«, says Moro. To survive this curve is almost synonymous
with the preliminaries. »When everyone starts at
the same time and then wants to pull towards the center in
the curve, it is like a funnel – whoever comes out of here
without a scratch is at the top of the ranking«. The races
are tough. »Peak athletic performances are demanded«.
Only the best deserve champagne and the dazzling spotlight.
»Experience is the key«, claims Moro, who has been racing
for twenty-five years. It’s a dangerous sport but »fear
is not allowed«, and one should have a certain cold-bloodedness
as everyone wants to win.
