LETO 2009 - Piešťany

J
uraj Šajmovič sa musel prebíjať
pohnutým detstvom. Kým sa jeho
vrstovníci bezstarostne hrali, on bol
ohrozovaný protižidovskými perzekúciami.
Dajme však slovo jemu samému.
„Nebyť vojny, nenaučil by som sa kresliť
a možno by sa môj osud uberal úplne iným
smerom. Verím, že náhody riadia naše životy.
S náhodami sa nedá manipulovať, nie je
možné ich ani predvídať. Náhody jednoducho
vznikajú, objavujú sa neplánovane a dávajú
smer našim životom. Náhodou som bol pol
roka zavretý za vojny v bunkri a nevedel som,
čo robiť s nudou. Mal som niekoľko poštových
známok a začal som ich odkresľovať. Stále
a každý deň. Chytilo ma to. Potom sme boli
oslobodení, zabudol som na kreslenie.
Neskôr, keď som začal vydávať časopis
s väčšími či menšími prestávkami som opäť
kreslil - skoro stále. Medzitým som nakrútil asi
stovku filmov a nafotografoval knihu
fotografií. Keď som už nepatril práve
k najmladším a filmov bolo už pomenej,
sadol som si do kúta a maľoval som akvarely
s mnohými tvárami a postavami. Neprešlo
veľa času a uskutočnil som si svoj sen maľovať
olejom. Bolo to jednoduché, od Ježiška som
dostal stojan, sám som si kúpil farby, štetce,
olej a riedidlo. Nemám veľa obrazov. Ročne
pribudne tak päť až osem olejomalieb. Tým sa
udržujem pri živote. Dávam do nich všetko,
čo mi chodí po hlave. Nie je to ľahké, som
k sebe prísny a podpíšem sa iba vtedy, keď
súhlasím s každým ťahom štetca. Maľovanie
mi spôsobuje ohromné vyžitie a radosť, ale aj
námahu, pretože som vlastne amatér, insitný
autor, nikdy som sa to neučil, iba ak v tej
podzemnej skrýši za vojny. Keď vidím, že
niekto porozumel mojim myšlienkam, tak
jasám.
V Starých Piešťanoch som strávil pol roka
v bunkri, takže tu sa začínala moja
umelecká púť. My Piešťanci sme veľkí
lokálpatrioti. A máme aj byť prečo. Ani sa
nedá vymenovať všetko, kvôli čomu to je.
Ale vieme, že je to vecou srdca. Žijem už
pol storočia v Prahe, ale nikdy som sa
nezriekol svojho národa, ani svojho mesta,
naopak, kde sa dalo, tam som ho
spomenul. V mojich memoároch sa
vyskytuje naše mesto najmenej v dvoch
tretinách knihy. Bol by som rád, keby sa
táto kniha dostala do rúk aj mojim
rodákom. Výstavu, ktorá prvýkrát spája
moje fotografie s maľbami, venujem
pamiatke môjho brata Ondreja, ale aj
mestu Piešťany, ktoré tak miloval.“ z
s Na vernisáži výstavy odovzdal primátor Remo Cicutto Jurajovi Šajmovičovi pamätnú medailu mesta Piešťany a zároveň ho pozval
na slávnostné otvorenie letnej kúpeľnej sezóny.

uraj Šajmovič had a turbulent childhood.
While most other children were playing
games, without a care in the world, he
was threatened by anti-Semitic persecution.
He talked to us about his life.
"If there hadn't been a war, I would not
have learned to draw and my life would
probably be different. I believe that
coincidences control our lives. You cannot
manipulate or foresee them. They just appear
incidentally and give direction to our lives.
"I was hiding in a bunker for half a year
during the war and I was very bored. I had
a few stamps and I started to copy them every
day. I was hooked on it. Then we were
liberated and I forgot about drawing. Later,
when I began to publish a magazine, I drew
again. I also shot about 100 films and
published a book of my photographs. When
I got older and I did not shoot so many films,
I started to paint watercolours with faces and
figures. After a while, I realized my dream to
paint in oils. It was simple - I got an easel for
Christmas and I bought paints, brushes, oil
and paint thinner. I do not have a lot of
paintings - I create from five to eight of them
every year. It helps me a lot in my life. I put all
my thoughts into my paintings. It is not easy,
I am very strict with myself and I sign my work
only if I am satisfied with every stroke of my
brush. Painting brings me great joy as well as
strain because I am an amateur - an
autodidactic artist; I have never learnt it, only
in that bunker during the war. When I see
that somebody understands my ideas, I am
very happy.
"My artistic work started in old Piešťany
where I spent half a year in that underground
shelter. There are many reasons for Piešťany
citizens to be local patriots. It is not even
possible to name all of them but we know it
is a matter of heart. I have lived in Prague for
half a century but I have never forsaken my
nation or town. On the contrary, I have
mentioned it as much as possible. You can
read about our town in at least two thirds of
my book of memoirs. I would be very happy
if the citizens of Piešťany read this book as
well. I am dedicating this exhibition, which
connects my photographs with my paintings
for the first time, to the memory of my
brother Ondrej, and to the town of Piešťany
that he loved so much.” z

uraj Šajmovič blickt auf eine bewegte
Kindheit zurück. Während seine
Altersgenossen sorglos spielten,
gefährdeten antijüdische Repressalien
sein Leben. Lassen wir ihn aber an dieser
Stelle persönlich zu Wort kommen.
„Wäre der Krieg nicht gewesen, hätte ich
nicht gelernt zu malen und vermutlich
hätte mein Schicksal einen ganz anderen
Lauf genommen. Ich glaube daran, dass
Zufälle unser Leben bestimmen. Zufälle
sind nicht manipulierbar und lassen sich
nicht vorhersehen. Sie treten einfach auf,
ungeplant, und bestimmen die Richtung
unserer Leben. Und durch so einen Zufall
war ich während des Krieges ein halbes
