Course description: This course examines the policy making process based around the policy
cycle, from problem identification and policy formulation, through the processes of implementation to
subsequent evaluation. It does so from a UK perspective - though drawing generic lessons, where
possible - and students are encouraged to compare and contrast this with the situation in their own
country. The course considers the different types of tools and techniques that can aid these
processes, and looks at implementation using a number of case study examples.
Course schedule:
1) The policy cycle and the prevailing transport paradigm;
2) Governance and the influence of the EU;
3) Interactions with other policy areas;
4) Contributions of various tools and techniques;
5) Case study examples: car restraint, accessibility planning
Aim and objectives of the course: (i) to familiarize students with the policy cycle and policy making
