Course description: The rapid growth in car ownership and use in North West Europe in the second
half of the twentieth century resulted in many urban streets being dominated by road traffic, at the
expense of traditional street activities, leading to very poor street environments. Increasingly,
however, streets are being rebalanced to take better account of all user needs, through explicitly
recognizing the importance of both Link/Movement and Place functions, and involving a wider range
of professional and citizen groups. This course will explore this new, more holistic approach to urban
street planning and design, at a conceptual and methodological level, drawing on examples from the
UK and other European countries.
Course Schedule:
1) Changing approaches to urban street planning and design;
2) Street user groups and their design requirements;
3) Measuring street performance;
4) Designing for footway-based activities;
5) Designing for carriageway-based activities;
6) Balancing competing demands;
7) Case study: application of ‘shared space’ principles.
Aim and objectives of the course: (i) to familiarize students with the principles of street planning
and design; (ii) to examine the requirements of different street user groups, and (iii) to provide tools to
assist in street planning and design
Teaching method: Lectures, readings and workshop working with case study application.
Prerequisite: Basic English language ability, basic transport and traffic planning knowledge.
Teaching aids: Presentations and handouts.
Assessment method: Students are expected to (i) participate actively in discussions in the
classroom, and (ii) complete the group workshop project redesigning a street to better accommodate
all street user groups
