A.D.“ oder „Die Kastellanin“.
There are many wonderful locations in prague: the exuberantly
rich façades in the Old Town, the magnifi cent
renaissance and baroque palaces, the stone statues of
Charles Bridge, the monumental walls of prague Castle – or
simply a mysterious little side street.
Beginning in the 1980s, Prague caught the attention of the
world’s dream factories. All the big studios have come here
over the years, from 20th Century Fox to Columbia pictures.
One of the oldest American studios, Universal pictures, produced
Wanted, starring Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie, in
prague. French director Mathieu Kassovitz shot scenes for Babylon
A.D. in prague, and Walt Disney Motion pictures group
has already shot two fi lms in Prague: the fi rst part of the Chronicles
of Narnia fi lm series in 2005 and its sequel.
Since the 1930s, Prague has also been making fi lm history
itself. The Barrandov fi lm studios, founded by the family of
former Czech president Václav Havel, today owned by Moravia
Steel, is one of the most important pillars of the Czech
fi lm industry with around 2,000 jobs. Some 2,500 Czech and
international fi lms have been produced at the studios, including
some critical fi lms, children’s series, the legendary
fairy-tale fi lm Three Nuts for Cinderella and an increasing
number of commercial spots for cinema and TV.
The fi rst international star who fi lmed here was Barbra
Streisand in 1983, as producer, director and star of the musical
Yentl. In the fi lm, Charles Bridge served as part of a Polish
shtetl. Czech-American director Miloš Forman, who had just
won fi ve Oscars for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, was
next. The narrow streets of Old Town prague were the perfect
backdrop for his Mozart fi lm Amadeus – and the eight
Oscars were the best form of advertising for prague. After
the Velvet revolution, paramount pictures became a pioneer
in Prague, fi lming Mission: Impossible in the mid 1990s.
Cinemagoers in Prague probably see movies fi lmed
in the city entirely differently than other because, despite
the often de-familiarised context, they recognise the city
in many of the scenes. Czechs love fi lms and fi lm festivals,
which year for year draw movie greats who want to be
there in person when the newest productions debut.
The 4-star andel’s Hotel Prague, just ten minutes by car
from Barrandov Studios, has had the honour of welcoming
many big name fi lm stars in the past, including legendary
English director Sir Alan parker, german director Wim Wenders,
famed Iranian fi lmmaker Amir Naderi, French screenwriter
Benoit Delépine, English theatre and fi lm director Mike Leigh
as well as the fi lm crews for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince
Caspian of narnia, Babylon A.D. and The Castellan.
