Salzburg truly is worth a visit, especially in spring when
fresh green colours and the fi rst tender blossoms add colour
to the city. The city, which owes both its name as well
as its prosperity to the “white gold” of salt, presents a unique
setting: the unmistakable silhouette of Hohensalzburg Castle,
the monumental architecture of the baroque cathedral,
the residenz, the Franciscan and University Church in front
of Mönchsberg, storied Untersberg in the distance, Hellbrunn
palace with its trick fountains and, of course, narrow
streets and baroque squares of the Old Town, a UnESCO
World Heritage Site since 1997. Salzburg owes much of its architectural
heritage to the prince-Archbishops who reigned
up into the 19th century and gave the city an Italian fl air
that once earned it the nickname of “rome of the north”.
Culture and nature belong closely together in Salzburg,
just like coffee with homemade pastries and cakes. A must
is the Café Tomaselli, Salzburg’s oldest coffeehouse. Shopping
is best done zigzagging from getreidegasse through
the romantic passages to bombastic residenzplatz with its
beautiful farmers’ market. Thanks to these passages, fi lled
with cafés and shops, visitors will stay almost dry on their
walk through the Old Town even with Salzburg’s famous
drizzle. By the way, a great place for souvenirs is the tiny
shop called Salzburg Salz, which has an unbelievable selection
of salts from the region and from around the world.
Salzburg Salz is located directly next to the Festival Hall and
behind the residenzplatz.
When you’ve had enough of narrow pedestrian streets,
you can clear your head with a long walk along the banks
of the Salzach or discover the surroundings on the well-developed
network of bicycle trails. On the other side of the
river, Mirabell gardens, with their mythology-themed statues
and baroque museum, is well worth a visit. The park was
opened to the public by Emperor Francis Joseph and still
today presents itself as a jewel of gardening and landscape
design. The wedding hall, by the way, is widely considered
to be one of the most beautiful in all of Europe.
If all that baroque puts you in the mood to come back
to the present, you’ll be well advised to take the elevator up
Mönchsberg for a visit of the Museum der Moderne. Afterwards,
you can enjoy wonderful views of the city all the way
into the Salzkammergut from the restaurant m32.
