The CSX Rail Bed – Lake Wales Trailways project is a 3.02 acre parcel that is being managed as
part of a larger trail project commonly called Lake Wales Rails-to-Trails. The purpose was to
extend the existing trail ¼-mile to Ridge Scenic Highway (SR 17) and to provide trailhead parking.
Trail right-of-way is regularly mowed and maintained.
Accomplishments:
Resource Management:
A site assessment was conducted in August 2009 and no rare or endangered plants or
animals, including the blue tailed mole skink, were observed. There does not appear to be
evidence of any suitable habitat for these scrub species to occur.
Rail bed area was cleaned up of all old railroad ties, trash and cleared of vegetation by the
end of September 2009. Property contamination remediation was completed in October
2009.
Visitor Services:
The paved trail and grass parking area was completed and opened to the public in March
2010.
