In order to facilitate the discu<strong>ss</strong>ion on crucial i<strong>ss</strong>ues related to the<br />
dev<strong>elo</strong>pm<strong>en</strong>t proce<strong>ss</strong> in <strong>India</strong>, the <strong>Friedrich</strong>-<strong>Ebert</strong>-<strong>Stiftung</strong> publishes a<br />
series of books and papers of which this publication is a part. The <strong>Friedrich</strong>-<br />
<strong>Ebert</strong>-<strong>Stiftung</strong> (FES) is a non-profit, NGO supported by the Governm<strong>en</strong>t of<br />
Germany. Aiming at the str<strong>en</strong>gth<strong>en</strong>ing of democratic structures, the FES<br />
pr<strong>om</strong>otes training and policy ori<strong>en</strong>ted research programmes in Germany and<br />
in cooperation with partner organisations - in more than 100 countries acro<strong>ss</strong><br />
the world. The <strong>India</strong> office of FES works with policy makers, academic and<br />
research organisations, trade unions, and NGOs. Within the overall g<strong>en</strong>der<br />
approach the W<strong>om</strong><strong>en</strong>’s Empowerm<strong>en</strong>t and G<strong>en</strong>der Equality Project of the<br />
FES aims at the econ<strong>om</strong>ic and political empowerm<strong>en</strong>t of w<strong>om</strong><strong>en</strong>. Facilitating<br />
workshops and round tables, action based research and publications are an<br />
integral part of this work.<br />
