Saskatchewan citizens have long valued the ecologically rich landscapes that make up their province and have played a key role in managing habitat for migratory bird species such as waterfowl. DUC’s work with the people of Saskatchewan has been essential in achieving waterfowl habitat goals and preserving those landscapes. Waterfowl aren’t the only benefi ciaries of DUC wetland and habitat conservation efforts – people benefi t too. Wetlands are nature’s water fi lters. Beyond improving habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife, wetlands replenish groundwater sources, purify surface water and offer fl ood protection and erosion control. All of which contribute to a safe water supply. Although wetlands are considered nature’s nursery, the stark reality is that much of this habitat has been lost and the remainder continues to be degraded. Up to 70 per cent of Canada’s original wetlands have vanished in settled parts of the country, and more disappear every day. Our conservation work is not done. The girls and leaders meet once a week, where they have fun learning life skills, making friends, doing crafts, going on tours and hikes, singing songs, playing games and going camping. Older girls are eligible to earn high school credits and can apply for university scholarships. We welcome registrations any time of the year. The Humane Society is a registered non-profi t organization that operates the Battlefords Animal Shelter. At the Shelter, homeless animals are cared for until adopted. We invite you to join us for our Sunday morning service at 11:00 a.m. In addition, Living Faith Chapel operates the following programs which are available to the community: • Bridges for Children - working with children under the age of 12 who have contact with the RCMP. • Crystal’s Home - provides a safe, supervised independent living program for 13 - 17 year old females who are unable to remain at home due to child welfare issues. • Grief Share - a seminar and support group for people grieving the loss of someone close. North Battleford Biathlon Club Mission: to promote wellness in youth aged 7-18 through competitive cross country skiing and target shooting. Athletes in our club range from beginner to Olympic caliber. We meet at the Holy Family ski trails on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4 - 5 p.m., and Saturday at Blue Mountain, 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Contact: Doug Sylvester Phone - 445-6887 North Battleford City Kinsmen Band The North Battleford City Kinsmen Band is a community band whose mandate is to provide training on woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Anyone in the Battlefords and area ages eight to well over eighty is welcome. The three levels of performing options can accommodate a wide range of music experience. The beginners’ group is for those learning to play an instrument and they meet on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. The intermediate band is for those that are able to play an instrument and are looking for an opportunity to develop those skills. They meet on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:0 p.m. The senior band is for the more experience players. The North Battleford City Kinsmen Band is currently an amalgamation of the former NBCK youth program and the adults of the Battlefords’ Concert Bank. Dancing is at the mainstream level with some plus, depending on the ability of the dancers present. Dancing takes place each Wednesday from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. before Christmas and 2:00 - 4:30 p.m each Friday (coffee break at 3:00 p.m.) after Christmas in 2013 in the Slava Center (Ukrainian Senior Hall), 792 – 108th Street, North Battleford. Our Leisure Centre was opened in October of 1981 and is located at 1501-101st Street. Our membership at the end of 2008 was 98 paid members plus 27 honorary life members. The Centre is open fi ve days a week from 1 - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. We provide sociability and fellowship through card games, shuffl eboard and yearly Kaiser and Cribbage tournaments. A birthday party is held every second month and a catered supper at Christmas. The Centre has a picnic once a year and other social events are held for special occasions. The monthly members meeting is held the third Monday of each month. Coffee and lunch are served every afternoon following the social activities.
