Canadian Cancer Society<br />

- The <strong>Battlefords</strong> Unit<br />

The <strong>Battlefords</strong> Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society was<br />

established in 1947. As one of 10 such units in the province,<br />

volunteers carry out the work of the Cancer Society to the public.<br />

The Unit covers an area of approximately 100 miles around the<br />

<strong>Battlefords</strong>. Programs of the Cancer Society are: Education, adult<br />

and youth; Publicity; service to patients; Mastectomy rehabilitation<br />

programs; Emotional Support, a support program to cancer patients<br />

and their families; “Us Too” prostate cancer support group; Relay for<br />

Life, Daffodil sales, Daffodil pin sales and Daffodil month Residential<br />

Canvass, the raising of funds for the necessary programs of research<br />

and those previously mentioned.<br />

Membership is open to volunteers wishing to promote the programs<br />

The <strong>Battlefords</strong> Branch holds informational and educational events<br />

and offers support to individuals who are diabetic.<br />

The Canadian Mental Health<br />

Association <strong>Battlefords</strong> Branch<br />

We are a non-profi t, community based organization which supports<br />

and promotes the rights of persons with mental illness to maximize<br />

their full potential through education, advocacy programs and services<br />

and promotes and enhances the mental health and well-being of<br />

members of the community. The <strong>Battlefords</strong> branch is one of ten<br />

branches in Saskatchewan. Annual memberships are available for<br />

anyone wishing to be involved in the association or for anyone wishing<br />

to show their support. Please call our offi ce if you would like more<br />

information.<br />

The Training for Employment Program (TEP) offers an in-house<br />

therapeutic program and employment training opportunities within<br />

the community. TEP does individual contracts for snow removal, fl yer<br />

delivery, yard maintenance, and odd jobs, as well as providing a hot<br />

lunch program to members on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and<br />

Thursdays.<br />

The Social Recreation Program focuses on community involvement,<br />

education and advocacy services. Social activities and recreational<br />

opportunities are offered to clients at a subsidized cost (e.g. Christmas<br />

supper and monthly dances, special events, art, bingos, seniors program,<br />

daytrips, games nights, bowling, extensive summer programming, and<br />

more). We currently offer 6 - 8 social recreation programs per week,<br />

and even more during summer months.<br />

Based on the Saskatchewan New Start Model for life skills training,<br />

our Life Skills Program aims to assist clients with developing and<br />

maintaining essential skills of daily living that may have been lost<br />

due to loss of independence, institutionalization and so forth. The Life<br />

Skills Program runs Monday and Wednesday morning (except during<br />

summer months).<br />
