Aurora Chapter of
The Order of DeMolay
In 1919, Frank Land of Kansas City, Missouri, formed a club for
young men. For a name, they chose that of a French knight, Jacques
deMolay, and based their organization upon the rich history of attitudes,
traditions and values of his order. The seven precepts which the Order of
DeMolay practices are: fi lial love, reverence for sacred things, courtesy,
comradeship, fi delity, cleanliness and patriotism.
We believe young men need a safe environment in which to make
good friends, participate in wholesome activities and be exposed to good
role models. When given good direction and consistent guidance, they
can make good decisions about their actions and become the leaders of
their own organization.
The Order of DeMolay is made up of individual chapters, ours in
the Battlefords being known as Aurora Chapter. No religion or politics
is involved, although a short, non-denominational prayer is said at all
meetings. Leadership, public speaking, some memory work and learning
how to conduct a meeting are emphasized. Educational activities such
as fi rearms safety and boating courses are offered. Finally, though
leaders understand these are maturing young men, high standards of
conduct are expected.
Many meetings include recreation. We have attended at billiard halls,
bowling alleys and laser-tag warehouses and we plan fi shing outings
at the lake. We have held computer game tournaments and typically
travel out of province once per year to attend youth conventions with
other DeMolay clubs.
Some fund raising is involved, such as handling the coat check
at corporate Christmas parties, but care is taken to ensure it plays a
secondary role. Financial support is provided by our sponsoring Masonic
Lodge, Ionic #31 of the Battlefords.
The membership of the Aurora Chapter of DeMolay is growing.
Ours is an active club, where each member is given a position and has
specifi c responsibilities at each meeting. Any boy who is interested in
having fun and learning leadership skills which benefi t him for the rest
of his life should apply. He will be welcome.
