Aurora Chapter of<br />

The Order of DeMolay<br />

In 1919, Frank Land of Kansas City, Missouri, formed a club for<br />

young men. For a name, they chose that of a French knight, Jacques<br />

deMolay, and based their organization upon the rich history of attitudes,<br />

traditions and values of his order. The seven precepts which the Order of<br />

DeMolay practices are: fi lial love, reverence for sacred things, courtesy,<br />

comradeship, fi delity, cleanliness and patriotism.<br />

We believe young men need a safe environment in which to make<br />

good friends, participate in wholesome activities and be exposed to good<br />

role models. When given good direction and consistent guidance, they<br />

can make good decisions about their actions and become the leaders of<br />

their own organization.<br />

The Order of DeMolay is made up of individual chapters, ours in<br />

the <strong>Battlefords</strong> being known as Aurora Chapter. No religion or politics<br />

is involved, although a short, non-denominational prayer is said at all<br />

meetings. Leadership, public speaking, some memory work and learning<br />

how to conduct a meeting are emphasized. Educational activities such<br />

as fi rearms safety and boating courses are offered. Finally, though<br />

leaders understand these are maturing young men, high standards of<br />

conduct are expected.<br />

Many meetings include recreation. We have attended at billiard halls,<br />

bowling alleys and laser-tag warehouses and we plan fi shing outings<br />

at the lake. We have held computer game tournaments and typically<br />

travel out of province once per year to attend youth conventions with<br />

other DeMolay clubs.<br />

Some fund raising is involved, such as handling the coat check<br />

at corporate Christmas parties, but care is taken to ensure it plays a<br />

secondary role. Financial support is provided by our sponsoring Masonic<br />

Lodge, Ionic #31 of the <strong>Battlefords</strong>.<br />

The membership of the Aurora Chapter of DeMolay is growing.<br />

Ours is an active club, where each member is given a position and has<br />

specifi c responsibilities at each meeting. Any boy who is interested in<br />

having fun and learning leadership skills which benefi t him for the rest<br />

of his life should apply. He will be welcome.<br />

<strong>Battlefords</strong> Gymnastics Club<br />

<strong>Battlefords</strong> Gymnastics Club offering classes for boys and girls of all<br />

ages Starting at 2 years old and up. A great place for everyone.<br />

Classes run from Monday to Friday starting at 4:45 - 9:00 p.m.<br />

Wednesday morning 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Pre-school drop in. Thursday<br />

morning 2 to 4 years old classes from 9:15 - 11:30 a.m.<br />

Battleford 2000 Lions Club<br />

The Lions motto is “We Serve”<br />

Our two main money raising events are a Christmas Bazaar held<br />

the second Saturday in December at the Alex Dillabough Centre in<br />

Battleford and the “We’ve Got You Covered” Yard Sale held every May<br />

at the Battleford Area.<br />

We support Health Care and social programs in our community.<br />

We also support the Tot Lot.<br />

We assist worthwhile projects such as: CNIB, Canadian Diabetes<br />

Association, the Breast Health Centre and Ronald McDonald House.<br />

We deliver Meals on Wheels and host a Birthday Party at BDCC.<br />

We support the following Lion sponsored programs: Project Pride<br />

(Grade 1 students are presented Canada fl ags and certifi cates to instill<br />

Canadian Pride), Lions Dog Guides, Program, Lion Quest (training<br />

teaches to assist children to foster self-esteerm, self-discipline,<br />

responsibility, good judgement positive peers and a drug free life<br />

style).<br />

Within 24 hours, Lions send money to victims of natural disasters<br />

around the world.<br />

Come and join us in our worthwhile activities. Meetings are held the<br />

fi rst Wednesday of the month from September to June at 7:00 p.m. at<br />

the Lions Clubhouse at 162 - 22nd Street, Battleford.<br />
