North Battleford Water Doves Synchronized Swim Club The North Battleford Water Doves Synchronized Swim Club operates from October to April and is open to all swimmers interested in synchronized swimming. Programming is for ages 6 and up, with beginner and introduction programs. Recreational or competitive options are available as students progress.Swimmers are taught “fi gures” and “routines” and are awarded stars as they advance through the program. Encouraging a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and exercise as well as the benefi ts of team work, make synchronized swimming a rewarding and challenging sport. The Battleford Curing Club was formed in 1899 and the North Battleford Curling Club was formed in 1905. Facilities have existed in each of the communities since the fi rst outdoor rink was built around 1900. In the span of more than a century these two clubs have served the needs of curlers in the area have been host to numerous events at regional and provincial levels for men, ladies and juniors. In the past ten years our clubs have hosted both the Men’s Provincial Tankard and the Scotties Provincial Women’s Play downs. Recently the two clubs have amalgamated to form one entity with the express purpose of meeting the needs of local curlers and promoting the growth of the game in this region. The new organization is comprised of members from the previous boards and other community mined individuals whose interests include curling and the well-being of the communities of the Battlefords. The development of the Battlefords multiplex, known as the Credit Union CUPlex is a major step in the promotion and development of sport, culture and recreation for the Battlefords and surrounding area. As part of the larger facility, the curling center, named the Northlands Power Curling Centre in honor of its title sponsor, will most certainly take curling to new levels in North West Saskatchewan. The society is an affi liated chapter of the Saskatchewan Archaeological Society. It was formed in 2001 with the purposes of providing a forum for its members to learn about the archaeological resources of our area and to promote the protection of those resources. Our main function for raising money to promote hockey is the operation of the Civic Centre concession. All help in operating the concession is volunteer and these volunteers in turn receive funds for their various organizations. The major disbursement is the Jr. A North Stars with funds also going to the Midget AAA North Stars, Midget AA Barons, Bantam AA Barons and Pee Wee AA Barons. Also volunteering and receiving funds are Battlefords Figure Skating Club and Orcas Swim Club. The NWHDA also helps in sponsoring various hockey tournaments. Northwest Horses and Harness Club Purpose of Northwest Horses is for recreational wagon, sleigh, carriage rides and clinic’s held with special speakers. They own their building, Hillcrest Centre at 122 - 24th Street West in Battleford. It has a main fl oor, compete basement and attached wood working shop. There are about 90 members. Each week day there is something going on - crafts and sometimes carpentry. Social activities include games of all sorts, plus singing, cards, scrabble, cribbage, pool and shuffl eboard. Meetings and potluck dinners are held monthly. Each month the members entertain a bus load of residents from the Battlefords District Care Centre. We have a new computer room with 2 computers and a lap top for the seniors to use and up-grade their skills. Many local organizations make use of our hall. The horticultural Society uses it regularly. Family anniversaries, bridal showers and reunions are often help in our centre. We try to be a useful and helpful organization in our town. Membership is open to ages 50 years and over. A membership fee of $10.00 is required. It owns a small but very well-equipped hall at 792 - 101st Street. Members are 50 years of age or over and the annual fee is $5.00 per person. Membership at the end of 2010 was 80. Any member of 90 years of age qualifi es for a lifetime membership. On the fourth Wednesday of each month a birthday party is held, with a pot-luck supper and a dance with live local music. There are suppers and dances held for special occasions throughout the year. An old time dance is held once a month from October to April featuring live music. A jam session is held the fi rst Sunday afternoon of each month from October to June. Musicians bring your instruments. Everyone welcome to listen or dance. Admission in silver collection or bring something for snacks. The regular general meeting is held in the hall on the second Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. The hall is used regularly by the Bridge Club, Royal Purple and the North West Horse & Harners Club. It is available for rent, for meetings, reunions, birthday or anniversary parties and other functions. Activities include: monthly business meetings at the Don Ross Center craft room on the fi rst Friday of every month September - May - day long sewing sessions, usually Thursday, Friday and Saturday, also at the craft room; retreats; biennial quilt shows; classes taught by members at no charge; and projects for donation within the community. On sewing days, members work on their own projects, take a class from another member, or work on a charity project. Nothing is compulsory, and members can attend as often or as little as they like. Our skill levels range from beginner to expert, and we are happy to help new quilters learn. There is a reasonable annual membership fee and all are welcome.
