5.6 Soundness <strong>and</strong> Completeness<br />

Soundness <strong>and</strong> completeness are two major issues of the resolution algorithm.<br />

While soundness refers to the correctness of the proof procedure, completeness<br />

implicates that all the possible inferences can be derived by using the<br />

algorithm. Formal definitions of these are presented here for convenience.<br />

Definition 5.9: A proof process is called sound, if any inference α has<br />

been proved from a set of axioms S by a proof procedure, i.e., Sα, it<br />

follows logically from S, i.e., S α.<br />
