which it is expressed. The basic difference between semantic nets <strong>and</strong> CD lies<br />

in the naming of the connecting links. In semantic nets, one may name the<br />

connecting links between events according to its relevance to the context <strong>and</strong><br />

consequently the name differs for different users. A CD, on the other h<strong>and</strong>,<br />

requires a st<strong>and</strong>ard assignment of a dependence relationship <strong>and</strong> is, therefore,<br />

independent of the users. An English sentence <strong>and</strong> its corresponding CD<br />

representation is presented below to visualize the issues discussed above.<br />

Consider the sentence ‘She gave me a flower’. This is represented below in<br />

fig. 8.15.<br />

In the last figure, R denotes a recipient case relation, o denotes an object<br />

case relation, p denotes past tense, denotes a two way link between the<br />

actor <strong>and</strong> action <strong>and</strong> ATRANS st<strong>and</strong>s for transfer of possession. It is called a<br />

primitive action. The set of primitive actions in CD, proposed by Schank <strong>and</strong><br />

Abelson [10], is presented below.<br />
