<strong>in</strong>dicate a slight <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>fall over the entire northern coast of <strong>Tanzania</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> <strong>Salaam</strong> region. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Watkiss et al. (2011), however, it is unclear<br />

whether ra<strong>in</strong>fall <strong>in</strong> <strong>Tanzania</strong> will <strong>in</strong>crease or decrease with climate change, with some<br />

models project<strong>in</strong>g that precipitation may <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the late summer, with some signs of<br />

dry<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> early summer. Figure 15 shows monthly precipitation projections to the 2050s<br />

for a B1 scenario.<br />

If annual ra<strong>in</strong>fall do<strong>es</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease over com<strong>in</strong>g years, the current observed decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g trend <strong>in</strong><br />

number of ra<strong>in</strong>y days for <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> <strong>Salaam</strong> over the past several decad<strong>es</strong> (refer to Figur<strong>es</strong> 7-<br />

10), should it cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>in</strong>to the future, <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>es</strong> a potentially grim situation from the<br />

perspective of severe flood<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the city, as it sugg<strong>es</strong>ts that ra<strong>in</strong>fall <strong>in</strong>tensity is ris<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Increase <strong>in</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>fall <strong>in</strong>tensity is <strong>in</strong> agreement with general expectations that variability is<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g with climate change, and that both droughts and floods are likely to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong><br />

magnitude and frequency.<br />
