The governments of Norway and Denmark have both made commitments to support climate<br />
change <strong>in</strong>itiativ<strong>es</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Tanzania</strong>. Norway has expr<strong>es</strong>sed <strong>in</strong>ter<strong>es</strong>t <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g economic growth<br />
and poverty reduction with a focus on energy, climate and environment, as well as<br />
improvements <strong>in</strong> maternal and child health. <strong>Tanzania</strong> and Norway are work<strong>in</strong>g together to<br />
combat climate change, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g through efforts <strong>in</strong> reduc<strong>in</strong>g defor<strong>es</strong>tation and for<strong>es</strong>t<br />
degradation (REDD), for which Norway has allocated NOK 500 million (US$ 73 million) for<br />
the development of a 5-year national REDD program. <strong>Tanzania</strong>’s REDD strategy is be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
developed <strong>in</strong> collaboration with the UN-REDD Programme.<br />
Denmark has supported <strong>Tanzania</strong> on environmental issu<strong>es</strong> for several years, on issu<strong>es</strong> such as<br />
urban environmental management and natural r<strong>es</strong>ourc<strong>es</strong> management, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g for<strong>es</strong>try and<br />
wetlands management. Denmark also supports environmental ma<strong>in</strong>stream<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> polici<strong>es</strong>,<br />
strategi<strong>es</strong> and legislation, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Poverty</strong> Reduction Strategy.<br />
Effectiven<strong>es</strong>s and susta<strong>in</strong>ability of exist<strong>in</strong>g mechanisms<br />
<strong>Climate</strong> change mitigation and adaptation strategi<strong>es</strong> have largely focused on the agriculture,<br />
for<strong>es</strong>try and land use sectors. Activiti<strong>es</strong> have centered on for<strong>es</strong>try and wildlife conservation,<br />
promotion of susta<strong>in</strong>able agriculture, and enhanc<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>able land use. A few REDD and<br />
CDM projects are <strong>in</strong> the pipel<strong>in</strong>e for <strong>Tanzania</strong>.<br />
Other measur<strong>es</strong> are be<strong>in</strong>g undertaken through m<strong>in</strong>isterial arrangements, e.g., the national<br />
for<strong>es</strong>try and beekeep<strong>in</strong>g programme (M<strong>in</strong>istry of Natural R<strong>es</strong>ourc<strong>es</strong> and Tourism), PADEP<br />
(M<strong>in</strong>istry of Agriculture and Food Security) and efforts <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrated water r<strong>es</strong>ourc<strong>es</strong><br />
management (M<strong>in</strong>istry of Water and Irrigation). Th<strong>es</strong>e programs receive local and<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational f<strong>in</strong>ancial support to orient their focus on facilitat<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>able use of natural<br />
r<strong>es</strong>ourc<strong>es</strong> as a strategy for reduc<strong>in</strong>g GHG emissions, improv<strong>in</strong>g the livelihoods of poor<br />
