Penrose et al. (2010) analyzed urban environmental data and the burden of cholera <strong>in</strong> <strong>Dar</strong><br />

<strong>es</strong> <strong>Salaam</strong> and found that cholera <strong>in</strong>cidence was most closely associated with <strong>in</strong>formal<br />

hous<strong>in</strong>g, population density, and the <strong>in</strong>come level of <strong>in</strong>formal r<strong>es</strong>idents. Figure 22 shows<br />

cholera-prone areas <strong>in</strong> <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong> <strong>Salaam</strong>.<br />

The household surveys documented only one case of cholera. The University of <strong>Dar</strong> <strong>es</strong><br />

<strong>Salaam</strong> team had difficulty <strong>in</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g data on trends <strong>in</strong> diseas<strong>es</strong> epidemics such as<br />

cholera from the health faciliti<strong>es</strong>. They found, however, that Ilala Municipality reported<br />
