Recidivism was defined in terms of reconviction
as recorded by the NSW Children’s Court.
The study noted complications with small
sample sizes and short observation periods.
This study examined the reoffending patterns
of young people in NSW and compared the
differences in reconviction between juveniles
who attended conferencing with those who
did not. The follow-up period ranged from
27–39 months. The study used survival
analysis to measure the probabilities
of reconviction and showed that:
versus court
• the probability of reconviction within two years
of appearing in court in 1997 was 0.38: that
is, 38% of juveniles will have been reconvicted
within two years
• the difference in reconviction between those
who attended court and those who attended
a juvenile justice conference was statistically
significant. Those attending the conference
were less likely to be reconvicted, although
the difference was small.
