number of prior convictions<br />
• one <strong>in</strong> five (19.9%) defendants had a prior<br />
history of adult imprisonment <strong>and</strong> prior<br />
imprisonment was greatest for defendants<br />
appear<strong>in</strong>g for serious crim<strong>in</strong>al trespass.<br />
The ABS prison census is conducted on<br />
30 June each year. The 2005 data collection<br />
<strong>in</strong>dicated that:<br />

• 60% of prisoners had been <strong>in</strong> prison on at<br />
least one other occasion <strong>in</strong> their lifetime<br />
• the proportion of prisoners with prior<br />

10% s<strong>in</strong>ce the 2004 census.
