Middle School Forestry CDE 202 13, T 7S, R 13E? – What is the distance between point A & B? 3. Legal descriptions will be written or described according to the following examples: – NW---------------Northwest – T------------------Township – SE----------------Southeast – R------------------Range – S------------------Section (640 acres) – ¼-----------------Quarter of a section (160 acres) 4. Thirty (30) minutes will be allowed for this session. 5. Ten (10) or 20 questions or problems will be completed. 6. Ten (10) points (10 questions) or five (5) points (20 questions) will be awarded for each correct answer. Compass and Pacing (100 points) 1. The contestant will use a hand compass and pacing to simulate the determination of the property lines on a tract of timber for cruising timber. The compass course will have ten (10) marked points. The student will start at any point and record the compass azimuth reading and distance to the next point. 2. Students must use the compasses supplied at the contest by the event judge. These compasses will be graduated in two degree (2º) increments and be attached to wooden stakes. 3. Thirty (30) minutes will be provided for this session. 4. A total of 100 points are possible: Ten (10) points for each correct numbered site. Five (5) points will be awarded for the correct azimuth and five (5) points for correct distance. Partial credit will be given with a deduction of one point for each two degrees or two feet the participant is off the correct answer. Scoring General Knowledge 100 points Dendrology 100 points Equipment Identification 100 points Forest Disorders 100 points Timber Cruising For Wood Volume 100 points Map Interpretation or Compass and Pacing 100 points TOTAL 600 points Tie Breakers Ties will be broken by using the scores from the General Knowledge test first, then if needed the tree identification, and then if still needed the Equipment Identification. Florida FFA Career Development Event Handbook Awards The top three contestants in each of the following areas will be given special recognition. • General Knowledge/Management • Dendrology • Equipment Identification • Forest Disorders • Timber Cruising • Alternate Forestry application Awards will be presented at an awards ceremony. Awards are presented to teams as well as individuals based upon their rankings. Awards are sponsored by a cooperating industry sponsor(s) as a special project and/or by the general fund of the Florida FFA Foundation.
