Middle School Tool
Identification CDE
Purpose
The Tool Identification Event is designed to develop the ability
to correctly identify the names and uses of a variety of tools
common to the Agricultural Education Curriculum.
Eligibility
The participant must be an active member of a charter Florida
FFA chapter and enrolled in grades 6, 7, or 8. Each Middle
School chapter may enter a team of four individuals. Only the
top three scores will be calculated for the team total.
Event Procedures
1. Each participant must have a #2 pencil.
2. FFA members must be in official dress, appropriate to the
contest, and will be scored accordingly.
Event Format
Identification (80 points – 40 minutes)
1. Forty (40) tools will be selected from the attached official
list.
2. When two sets of tools are used, they shall include the
same tools.
3. No tool will be used more than once in the identification
portion of the contest.
4. Each participant will be assigned to a tool to begin
identification.
5. Each participant will remain at each tool for one minute
and then progress to the next tool.
6. No participant will be permitted to go to a tool for a second
time.
7. Grading will be done by giving two (2) points for each tool
correctly identified.
8. If it is observed that a participant uses the same number on
his or her paper for more than one identification, neither
number will be counted as correct thus resulting in a
penalty for using the same number twice.
9. Tool Identification may be done by picture or PowerPoint,
as determined by the CDE Coordinator.
Knowledge Test (20 points – 40 minutes)
1. A written test designed to test the knowledge of
the participant regarding the proper use(s) and/or
categorization of 20 randomly selected tools from the
attached official list.

2. Each participant will be given 40 minutes to complete the
test.
Scoring
Identification 80 points
Knowledge Test 20 points
Total 100 points
Tie Breakers
At discretion of the CDE Coordinator.
Awards
Awards will be presented at an awards ceremony. Awards are
presented to teams as well as individuals based upon their
rankings. Awards are sponsored by a cooperating industry
sponsor(s) as a special project and/or by the general fund of the
Florida FFA Foundation.
