Middle School Nursery and Landscape CDE Middle School Nursery and Landscape CDE Purpose The Nursery and Landscape Career Development Event is designed to stimulate learning activities related to nursery practices and landscaping including the identification of plants, insects, and diseases. Eligibility The participant must be an active member of a chartered Florida FFA Chapter and enrolled in grades 6, 7, or 8. Each middle school chapter may enter one team of four individuals. Only the top three scores will be calculated for the team total. Event Procedures 1. Contestants should bring a clipboard and #2 pencils. 226 2. Absolutely no talking will be tolerated during the contest. Any contestants violating this rule will have their cards taken up and will be disqualified. 3. No FFA advisors/coaches will be allowed in the area of the contest, but arrangements will be made to view the specimens directly following the last rotation. 4. FFA members must be in official dress, appropriate to the contest, and will be scored accordingly. Event Format Written Exam A written exam of 35 questions will cover three of the following areas each year, in addition to general horticulture: • Principles of best management practices • Plant use • Business • Applying for a job • Grades and standards for nursery stock Live Practicums Two of the three live practicum’s will be a part of the event as described below: • Measuring Nursery Stock (100 points) • Landscape Interpretations (100 points) • Landscape Drawing (100 points - written) • Pruning (100 points) • Plan Layout (100 points – written) Florida FFA Career Development Event Handbook • Job Evaluation (100 points) • Landscape management (100 points) Problem Solving Practicums Two of the following problem solving practicums will be part of the event as described below. The situation will be presented and the student will answer questions in a multiple choice format. • Handling a hazardous situation (100 points – written) • Identifying and controlling plant disorders (100 points – written) • Customer assistance (100 points – written) • Equipment maintenance (100 points – written) Identification Each student will demonstrate their ability to properly identify plants, pests and tools related to the nursery industry. The identification portion of this event will include 30 plants, 15 pests, and 15 tools. Scoring 35 Question Knowledge Test 350 points Live Practicum 200 points Problem Solving Practicum 200 points Plant, Pest & Tool Identification 600 points Tie Breakers Ties will be broken using the following procedure, unless otherwise noted by the CDE Coordinator. In breaking a tie for a team the drop score will be used first, followed by team written exam total, and then by team placing class total. Individual ties will be broken by oral reasons first, followed by written exam, and then by a single placing class (chosen by CDE Coordinator). If any of these are absent from a CDE, (ie. oral reasons, written exam, etc), then the next highest point practicum will be used. Awards Awards will be presented at an awards ceremony. Awards are presented to teams as well as individuals based upon their rankings. Awards are sponsored by a cooperating industry sponsor(s) as a special project and/or by the general fund of the Florida FFA Foundation.
