This level is inhabited by most sorts<br />

<strong>of</strong> demons (especially nabassu), plus<br />

giant centipedes, spiders <strong>of</strong> all types,<br />

su-monsters, volts, will-o-wisps,<br />

assassin bugs, asian elephants, leucrotta,<br />

spirit naga, and various molds<br />

and slimes.<br />

Each temple <strong>of</strong> Kali is occupied by<br />

monks. <strong>The</strong>re are three senior monks<br />

and 50 junior ones; all appear to be<br />

human. <strong>The</strong>y welcome travelers and<br />

invite them to worship. (Worshiping<br />

Kali results in a movement <strong>of</strong> one step<br />

toward chaotic evil.) Characters who<br />

refuse to worship are invited to shelter<br />

in the temple, and are then attacked.<br />

If the characters have previously<br />

killed the Grandfather <strong>of</strong> Assassins,<br />

Kali herself appears and attacks; otherwise,<br />

the temple monks are all the<br />

characters must contend with.<br />

<strong>The</strong> three senior monks are all rakshasa;<br />

the 50 junior monks are all 7thlevel<br />

assassins. Each temple contains a<br />

treasure <strong>of</strong> potions <strong>of</strong> climbing, extra-<br />

healing, and invulnerability, scrolls <strong>of</strong><br />

protection from illusions, plants, poison,<br />

and traps, a book <strong>of</strong> vile darkness,<br />

necklace <strong>of</strong> strangulation,<br />

scarab <strong>of</strong> death, hat <strong>of</strong> disguise, and a<br />

sword +2, nine lives stealer.<br />

23. Vaprak <strong>of</strong> the Trolls<br />

<strong>The</strong> smell <strong>of</strong> rotting jungle vegetation<br />

greets you before you can exit<br />

the conduit.<br />

This layer is home to Vaprak, demigod<br />

<strong>of</strong> trolls and ogres. Thousands <strong>of</strong><br />

both types <strong>of</strong> creatures live in the<br />

swamp. <strong>The</strong>re is a 10% chance per<br />

turn <strong>of</strong> encountering Vaprak.<br />
