Section 1 General in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> schools<br />

Checklist 1: Intercultural environment at whole-school level<br />

Notices, display materials, etc. acknowledge <strong>and</strong> provide positive<br />

images of different ethnic groups.<br />

The reception area has multilingual welcome notices, a world map<br />

indicating where pupils come from (including different parts of<br />

Irel<strong>and</strong>), photographs showing the diversity of the school<br />

population, a list or graph indicating the range of mother tongues<br />

represented in the school, etc.<br />

There is a clear <strong>and</strong> sympathetic reception process in place.<br />

New pupils receive a ‘starter kit’.<br />

Classroom <strong>and</strong> library material reflects positive images of ethnic<br />

<strong>and</strong> cultural diversity.<br />

Artwork reflects the cultural profile of the school.<br />

Games <strong>and</strong> hobby activities in the school can adjust flexibly to<br />

support inclusion.<br />

Funds can be accessed to support extra activities (trips, equipment,<br />

etc.).<br />

Special events are scheduled throughout the year to mark all<br />

cultures <strong>and</strong> heritages represented in the school.<br />

Pupils who are already bilingual are given training to act as<br />

assistants.<br />

Anti-racism education is included as part of the curriculum.<br />

Checklist 2: Provision of language support<br />

Language support is provided in relation to the English Language<br />

Proficiency Benchmarks <strong>for</strong> primary schools.<br />

The amount of support to be provided is calculated with reference<br />

to the guidelines in this resource book.<br />

The development of English language proficiency is monitored in<br />

relation to per<strong>for</strong>mance in curriculum themes.<br />

Liaison between class teachers <strong>and</strong> language support teachers is<br />

used to focus the programme of support.<br />

Feedback on progress is provided to class teachers.<br />
