The principal purpose of language support is to help children engage with mainstream curriculum<br />

learning. There<strong>for</strong>e, the best materials <strong>for</strong> language support are those that are in general use in the<br />

school already.<br />

Some examples include:<br />

Posters<br />

Activity books/sheets<br />

Storybooks<br />

Games<br />

Materials <strong>for</strong> language support<br />

Picture/photo dictionaries<br />

Sets of cards<br />

Phonics series<br />

(often with CD)<br />

Projects<br />

Computer software<br />

Reading schemes, nature, food pyramid, etc.<br />

Developing writing skills, structuring sentences, text, etc.<br />

Identifying <strong>and</strong> collecting vocabulary (word walls, etc.).<br />

Activity sheets may be done in the mainstream class when a<br />

child is newly arrived <strong>and</strong> cannot yet underst<strong>and</strong> classroom<br />

learning.<br />

Particularly those with a high level of repetition <strong>and</strong>/or a focus<br />

on the vocabulary being learnt in language support.<br />

Encourage interaction while focusing on theme-based<br />

vocabulary, question <strong>for</strong>ms, word recognition, etc.<br />

A few of these in the classroom will help both teacher <strong>and</strong><br />

pupils to overcome difficulties in making themselves<br />

understood.<br />

Learning vocabulary, sequencing, sentence building, telling a<br />

story, prompting discussion.<br />

Pronunciation, spelling, reading.<br />

Picture resources <strong>for</strong> classroom, classroom ‘Big Book’ or<br />

scrapbook, poster displays on different themes created by<br />

pupils, audio recordings, etc.<br />

Vocabulary development, creating text, identifying sounds.<br />

It should be noted that much material used in learning support is very suitable <strong>for</strong> language support.
